The fact that it is surprising, given that Ferrari has been around since F1's inception and is the winningest team in F1 history, signifies just how bleak the fortunes in Maranello have been for the better part of a decade.

The same can be said of Hamilton's team-mate Bottas. Haas could well be fifth in the order while Williams look likely to start the season in the lower half of the midfield. This enabled the designers to reduce the size of the sidepods in general and reduce drag. Even though atrocious weather conditions plagued the efforts of the teams to develop and test their cars in the first week, we finally saw their true colours in the second week.

Will Kimi Raikkonen do enough retain Ferrari seat at end of 2018?

Renault's tally was limited by a combination McLaren's reliability woes, the occasional setback for Red Bull and a gearbox-induced miserable final day for the works team, but the French manufacturer still logged more than 2,000 laps. "We can only be positive with what we have done and then we will see in some weeks where we are starting off and if we have improved".

But Dutchman finished strongly with two wins in Mexico and Malaysia.

The Ferrari driver bettered Daniel Ricciardo's impressive performance in the Red Bull from Wednesday and then just got quicker and quicker until he had almost a second on the Australian's time.

It left the Finn, Alonso and Raikkonen's Ferrari team-mate, Sebastian Vettel, as the only drivers to dip below 1min 18sec over the course of the fortnight in Spain.

Alonso proved that all is not lost for McLaren as he laid down a 1:17.784 on the hypersoft tyres to claim second place.

On the penultimate day at Barcelona, both Mercedes drivers completed full race simulations - and to ominous effect. Times set in testing are not considered official.

Ferrari remained at the top of the timesheets during the final morning of pre-season testing as McLaren faced another reliability issue with Fernando Alonso at the wheel.

An oil leak related to the chassis issue that stalled progress on the first day of testing this week forced a power unit refit and a defensive attitude from racing director Eric Boullier. Not for him or Mercedes the need to light up the time sheets with peacock bursts. "Looking forward to taking this car to Melbourne!" The balance is more together. Think of it as a horizontal shaft which absorbs the energy which results from any impact on the car from sideways. F1 teams are very smart when it comes to launching their cars. I was ill [this week] but I think in the end we had a decent day, a pretty OK feeling.

The Sauber rookie was responsible for the day's second red as he hit the Turn 11 barriers, damaging both his car and the barriers.
