Scotland stunned Ireland at Murrayfield in the opening match last year

Youngs' injury took the gloss off England's impressive start to their bid to capture an unprecedented hat-trick of Six Nations crowns.

Italy created a number of opportunities, but ultimately couldn't handle the more accurate English attack.

But Simmonds put the outcome beyond doubt - and secured England's try-scoring bonus point - in the 53rd minute when he found acres of space and used his pace to run in his first try for his country.

Italy had their moments, of course.

England, holders of the 2017 title, faces what appears to be a kind opening fixture this Sunday, against perennial underdogs Italy in Rome.

With fly-half Ford again involved in a loop move, and May once more cutting across, Watson sprinted clear and, with little room to play with, athletically grounded the ball despite opposing wing Tommaso Benvenuti's attempt to illegally shove him into touch.

At the same time he must now brace himself for the possibility of spending the rest of the Championship without Ben Youngs, whose nasty-looking knee injury clouded an otherwise beautiful sunny afternoon in the Eternal City.

"He's a completely humble boy who just gets on with it. He's fitted into the team well". The great thing about our team is that no one is a certainty. The intensity is a lot higher. He's got gas and he does all our speed work with the backs as he's that quick. It was a score that gave Italy encouragement to attack England's backs, although the visitors soon restored a 10-point cushion as Farrell surged through to score a self-converted try.

Six Nations debutant Sam Simmonds also scored two tries, in the second half, while George Ford and Jack Nowell turned over for England late on as Italy collapsed. Already this Six Nations, nines going down with knee complaints is a talking points. His attitude is great.

A full Six Nations game streamed to your smartphone or tablet will use around 700MB of data.

"England have big guys like Mako Vunipola, Courtney Lawes, Maro toje, Chris Robshaw and Ben Te'o, and we were beaten up". After the opening quarter, they upped the physicality and reduced the ease at which England was getting over the gain line.

"What they saw out there was a team playing competitive rugby with more to come".

Italy refused to let England get away, however, and Bellini touched down in the left corner in the 58th minute following another wonderful pass from Allan. It's a coach's job to train for the loss of key personnel. We are sure of the road we are on. Stop them crossing, whatever it takes.

The Azzurri managed to reduce the deficit midway through the half.

Ben Youngs leaves the pitch on a stretcher during England's win over Italy.

However, it is still a 13th consecutive Six Nations defeat for the Azzurri.

Farrell again missed, this time sending his kick wide of the left.

Jones was also delighted with England's dominant set piece in Rome. "When people write you off, it's a good position to be in", he said.

Jones added: "It was always going to be a tough game".

"We know we're off in certain areas, we know the progress we have to make".

Farrell's difficult conversion from the right touchline hit the post and stayed out.
