The Latest: Students describe shooting suspect as troubled

Video footage from inside the school showed students cowering on the floor of a classroom, screaming as loud gunfire came from the corridor outside.

"I was just praying".

"He shot guns because he felt it gave him, I guess, an exhilarating feeling", the student said. "We've trained the kids what to do, and the frustration is that we did everything that we were supposed to do... and still have to have so many casualties... it's very emotional", Melissa Falkowski said on Anderson Cooper 360.

According to the doctors, of the 17 shooting victims taken to the hospital, two died.

On Wednesday afternoon, two local schools were placed on a lockdown after a gunman was reported on the campus of Morse High.

For 30 minutes, the teacher and the students waited in fear until they heard SWAT officers securing the room.

A SWAT team helped Garrett Schreiber's classroom evacuate safely, he said, avoiding the sight of injury and death around them.

According to the Miami Herald, the ex-student had been flagged as a threat, one teacher told the paper.

Students interviewed at the scene described the suspect as a "troubled kid".

Wielding a semi-automatic AR-15 assault rifle, the perpetrator murdered at least 17 people on the school premises and nearby. "Then all you heard were gunshots".

Israel said investigators were dissecting the suspect's social media posts.

Worried friends are posting the missing kids' names and photos on Twitter and Facebook. Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel announced the news without naming the coach.

It was named after the Everglades environmentalist Marjory Stoneman Douglas.

He was identified as Nicolas Cruz, according to various media reports.

Sheriff Israel earlier added that the suspect had at least one AR-15 rifle and multiple magazines. It's so horrible and senseless.

"Ever since middle school he has always been very violent - just not in the right state of mind", Alaina Cruz said.

"My prayers are with everybody impacted", Governor Rick Scott told reporters at a press conference Wednesday evening. He was enrolled at another Broward County school, officials said.

Rosenblatt said that her daughter made the connection after the shooting, when she visited the purported Instagram account of the shooter.
