Cabe destacar que, a nivel mundial, esta enfermedad no transmisible amenaza con ser una de las principales causas de mortalidad relacionada con enfermedades en los niños.

"Existen factores plenamente demostrados que son causantes de algunos tipos de cáncer como las radiaciones ionizantes, los factores genéticos y ambientales como el uso de pesticidas, soluciones orgánicas y exposición a campos electromagnéticos".

Vidal aprovechó la oportunidad para recordar que la ciudad no cuenta con ningún profesional hematólogo ni oncólogo infantil que permitan un tratamiento específico ante el cáncer. A nivel europeo, se estima que más de medio millón de ciudadanos son supervivientes de un tumor durante la infancia o la adolescencia, un número que ascenderá al millón de personas entre 2020 y 2025.

El 15 de febrero fue declarado como el Día internacional del cáncer infantil en Luxemburgo en 2001.

Tanto en el INCAN como en otros hospitales y centros de salud se realizarán diversas actividades de concienciación este jueves, lo cual contribuirá a "reforzar lo que se hace todo el año que es prevenir, promocionar y diagnosticar precozmente", señaló Rolón.

"La leucemia aguda, una enfermedad que hasta hace 30 años era considerada inevitablemente fatal, con algunas remisiones temporales que después no podían mantenerse. La mayoría de los niños sufre algún tipo de leucemia". En comparación con el resto del país Morelos está por arriba de la media en casos nuevos, defunciones y sobrevida (que son aquellos que siguen vivos después de ser diagnosticados). El CENSIA cuenta con un Programa Nacional específicamente creado para la prevención y control del cáncer en menores de 18 años, con coordinación Federal y representación en todos los Estados.

Además en los países de ingresos altos, debido a que los niños suelen estar sometidos a una estrecha vigilancia médica y parental, las posibilidades de una detección precoz son mucho más elevadas que en los de escasos recursos.

Detalló que Fundación Canica contribuye con los pacientes y sus familiares una vez que hay un diagnóstico establecido con apoyo principalmente sicológico; se reciben un promedio de 75 pacientes por año, a quienes al igual que sus familias les ayudan a afrontar la enfermedad fortalecidos, esto incide positivamente en el tratamiento.
