Mike Pence insists 'no daylight' between US and South Korea over talks

An attack or incident involving North Korea could further destabilise relations and prompt a diplomatic crisis - particularly in light of recent North Korean nuclear tests.

Nothing has been settled on any trip north by South Korean President Moon Jae-in.

The son of North Korean refugees and a leading advocate of a previous liberal government's "Sunshine Policy" of engagement with the North, Moon has spent his career - a lifetime, really - waiting for this chance.

The Winter Olympics' opening ceremony was hit with a cyber attack, officials for the PyeongChang games confirmed - but stopped short of blaming Russia for the breach.

A massive military parade in Pyongyang on the eve of the just-opened Pyeongchang Games has been used as Exhibit A by skeptics. Its negotiators protested last month when South Koreans raised the issue during talks over the Olympics, a line North Korea's state-run media has reiterated.

Moon has benefited from the rock star-like reception that Kim Jong Un's sister, Kim Yo Jong, has received here. The two did not interact - although Pence, who arrived late, greeted the other dignitaries around him - prompting criticism of the American vice president. So it's once in a lifetime thing, so that's why the Games is so special.

The cheerleaders sang and danced in perfect unison. Defense Secretary James Mattis and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Joe Dunford, along with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson-all oppose the scenario. About 800 conservative protesters gathered in central Seoul to tear up photos of Kim Jong Un and condemn Moon for being too soft on North Korea. When the wind gusts return, you don't want to be covered in that debris.

The most important part of the visit, however, came during one of the quieter moments. But that won't be the end of the matter, given that Moon will likely come under post Olympic domestic political pressure to make the trip. He previously worked at The Associate Press, where he won two Pulitzer Prizes for his photography.

The increased connectivity and use of technology has opened the games up to more vulnerabilities and potential cyberattacks.

International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach then handed the podium to Moon, who declared the Olympics officially open. "We are making sure our systems are secure and they are secure". Saturday's game ended in a crushing 8-0 loss to Switzerland.

Pence's office didn't directly address Kim's invitation to Moon.

"The new document contained the same metadata properties as those related to Operation GoldDragon, and sought to gain persistence on systems owned by organisations involved with the Winter Games", Sherstobitoff said in a statement.

Pence was scheduled to leave for the United States on Saturday night.

The Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, the first Games held in South Korea in 30 years, officially opened on Friday with fireworks, song and symbolism featured amid celebrations of light, peace, and harmony.

The wind has made life tough so far for competitors, with several athletes complaining of difficult conditions. If you win the start in a race in the 500 meters, you have a 75 percent chance or greater of winning the race.

Later, the women's slopestyle snowboarding also fell victim to the wind, as the qualifying session was scrapped with riders going straight into the final on Monday.
