Memo Has No Impact on Russia Probe — Gowdy

"I don't", Hurd responded to Stephanopoulos, adding, "I don't agree with some of my colleagues. always using the words 'explosive'" to describe the document".
Schiff and others said the FBI had many reasons to put Page under surveillance and conduct other aspects of an investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, and whether Trump or his associates were involved.
Beyond the members' positions, the transcripts are revelatory in how this secretive committee functions.
-CNBC's Christina Wilkie contributed to this article. It also published the names of senior FBI and Justice Department officials, including Rosenstein, who it said signed off on the surveillance.
The White House declassified and House Republicans released a controversial memo Friday that prompted the judge's action.
The memo said: "The application does not mention Steele was ultimately working on behalf of - and paid by - the DNC and Clinton campaign".
President Donald Trump, who advocated the memo's release over the fierce objections of the Justice Department and the FBI, told reporters the document shows "a lot of people should be ashamed of themselves".
The committee's top Democrat, Adam Schiff, branded the GOP memo "a political hit job". "We are not weasels". You know you're Trump, right?
Mueller's investigation has so far led to guilty pleas by two of Trump's foreign policy advisers to charges of lying to the FBI, and indictments of former campaign manager Paul Manafort and his business partner Rick Gates. That's when Fusion GPS hired Steele.
The three-and-a-half page memo was written by Republicans on the House intelligence committee based on what they have learnt in an investigation.
"The goal here really isn't to find out the answers from the FBI". The memo cites "a troubling breakdown of legal processes established to protect the American people from abuses related to the FISA process", a reference to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. Despite their newfound interest in "transparency", neither Trump nor his allies have expressed much interest in making that happen.
The memo fight takes place as attorneys for Trump and Mueller negotiate possible testimony from the president.
In a personal moment, said Gowdy also said he thought he had been a "pretty lousy politician".
"Firing Rod Rosenstein, DOJ (Department of Justice) leadership, or Bob Mueller could result in a constitutional crisis of the kind not seen since the Saturday night massacre", the Democrats wrote, referencing Richard Nixon's firing of the Watergate scandal prosecutor. Trump has insisted there was no collusion by his campaign. Trump has repeatedly denied that allegation.
Outstanding questions: It's an open question whether Steele's bias matters if the information he provided was sound. This wouldn't exactly be the first time. "President Trump should declassify it promptly".
"In this political atmosphere, anything critical of the F.B.I. will be used against it", said Jack Goldsmith, a top Justice Department official in the George W. Bush administration.
Separately, Trump - who is spending the weekend at his Florida resort - crowed on Twitter about his approval ratings.
Brennan also downplayed the amount of influence the dossier had among those in intelligence circles.
"As well, the committee voted to allow Democrats to make their memo available to all House members, which would follow the same procedures used for the Republican memo". House Oversight Committee Chair Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) was selected to read the FISA applications and report back to the group.
