Trump intended to fire Russia inquiry's special counsel but backed down: report

31 Enero 2018, 01:11 | Bibiana Flor

A trial of Hillary would have meant Obama in the witness chair being asked, "What did you know, sir, and when did you know it?" Four sources tell the New York Times that Trump ordered Muller's firing in June, as reports began circulating that Mueller was investigating him for obstruction of justice.

Mueller was appointed by deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein, with attorney general Jeff Sessions having earlier recused himself from the Russia investigation.

The fake news con isn't working, as all eyes are on Donald Trump's illegal efforts to save his own skin and kin from Russia justice.

"Typical New York Times", he added.

Much speculation has grown around whether Trump will attempt to fire Mueller as his investigation proceeds.

The "Fox & Friends" hosts quoted the president, cast doubt on the quality of The Times' sources, and suggested that the reporting that Trump pressured his aides to fire Mueller was unimportant. Former FBI Director James Comey, whom Trump fired last year, precipitating Mueller's appointment, also has talked with the special counsel's investigators.

In an interview with The New York Times in the Oval Office in July, the president pointedly kept open the option of firing Mueller, saying that the special counsel would be passing a red line if his investigation expanded to look at Trumps finances.

The gap in the exchange between the FBI officials was revealed to lawmakers by the Justice Department as it produced a second batch of the pair's text messages to six congressional committees last weekend.

"The report that President Trump sought to fire Robert Mueller - the man leading the Trump-Russia investigation - is profoundly disturbing, to say the least", Smith's statement continued.

Mueller's defenders have been calling all along for Congress to enact special legislation that protects him, but neither House Speaker Paul Ryan nor Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has seemed enthusiastic about going along with it. Plus Trump would have to sign any such bill.

"Over this week, and certainly over the last six months, we've seen this coming from people who are Trump apologists", Scarborough said. Trump has at times called the probe a "witch hunt" and reports of Russian collusion "a hoax". It's unclear where the interview took place. "My dealings with Bob Mueller have always been cordial, respectful - the way it should be".

And this isn't the first time McGahn threatened to resign over Trump's legally troublesome actions.

"The President has not even discussed that", senior counselor Kellyanne Conway said in August 2017.

More information has also been unearthed about FBI collusion with British spy Christopher Steele, who worked up-for Fusion GPS, the dirt-divers of the Clinton campaign-the Steele dossier detailing Trump's ties to Russia and alleged frolics with prostitutes in a Moscow hotel.

Most white-collar prosecutions turn on the issue of criminal intent.

Scaramucci told CNN's Chris Cuomo that The Times report is "totally irrelevant because he actually didn't fire Mueller". In what forum and format will the public see the full range of the evidence against the President?

During a January news conference with Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg, Trump suggested that an interview may not be needed.

In December, Trump said he wasn't considering firing Mueller. "It is his [McGahn's] job to go talk with the boss, give him the best legal advice". One narrative: A serious investigation into election interference, obstruction of justice and other possible crimes has been stymied by Trump and his allies. Twitter declined to comment on whether Mueller has interviewed anyone from its staff.

And later, he told reporters that he would do so under oath.
