The Sessions interview with Mueller comes nearly three months after the special counsel directed the broader Justice Department to turn over a wide array of documents related to the probe. Trump has dismissed the report as fake news. It was about Mueller as a member of the golf club, according to The Times. Trump has at times called the probe a "witch hunt" and reports of Russian collusion "a hoax".

White House Counsel Don McGahn refused to ask the Justice Department to fire Mueller, and threatened to quit instead. "The President's lawyers, including Mr. Cobb, have tried to keep Mr. Trump calm by assuring him for months, amid new revelations about the inquiry, that it is close to ending". Explain why McGahn disagreed with Trump. Trump must have known this, of course. I like to imagine McGahn literally curling up into the fetal position on his office floor when he heard Trump float that idea. Ominous for the White House.

"Speaking of typical New York Times, you look in the first paragraph - all of this reporting based on four people who are told of the matter", said Pete Hegseth, one of the hosts, adding that the story "screams of a leak from the special counsel".

Mueller could not legally have considered political affiliations when making hiring decisions.

Trump said last year that he would "100%" be willing to meet with Mueller.

"The desperation, every day there is desperation, and every day, it blows up in their faces", he added. Trump fires then-FBI Director James Comey in May 2017. "There's been no indication the president or the White House are not cooperating with the special counsel".

"If the FBI Director, Christopher Wray, and Rod Rosenstein don't want it released, I probably want it released", says Hamilton.

Trump has long demonstrated a preoccupation with those who have overseen the Russia investigation.

But McGahn, who previously served as the Trump campaign's top attorney, had already found himself the subject of scrutiny, after former acting Attorney General Sally Yates' congressional testimony raised fresh questions about McGahn's role in the saga involving former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

The president was asked about the report on Friday as he arrived at the annual World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

At the same time, the officials said that Trump discussed possibly firing Mueller with his friends.

Mueller is investigating allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election and possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Moscow. Mark Warner, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, said, "Firing the special counsel is a red line that the President cannot cross". I think he's weighing that option.
