Microsoft confirms Spectre fix will slow down your Windows PC

Upcoming CPU patches could cause performance issues

Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) has confirmed that virtually all of its devices could be affected.

Linux vendors are also rolling out patches across AMD products now.

Anyone who writes software has to patch. The Patch Tuesday rollout includes fixes for Windows, Office and Edge. Spectre and Meltdown have been reported as kernel flaws present in a majority of Intel, AMD and Arm processors.

The company said it will release further updates on its progress "as needed". "As a result, we expect some workloads may have a larger impact than others, so we will continue working with the industry to minimize the impact on those workloads over time".

Intel is facing a growing number of lawsuits, including claims from groups of consumers alleging that it misled consumers by failing to disclose the security hole and demands for compensation based on the potential slower performance of machines that have been patched.

Papermaster maintains that AMD processors are not vulnerable to the exploit variant, dubbed Meltdown.

Microsoft confirms Spectre fix will slow down your Windows PC

"The bottom line is that continued collaboration will create the fastest and most effective approaches to restoring customer confidence in the security of their data". Moving from Intel to AMD is easiest since AMD and Intel chips share a common core technology called the x86 instruction set, they said.

What systems require patching for vulnerabilities? Browsers can be used to exploit these vulnerabilities.

Last week, security researchers found a couple of major vulnerabilities affecting most modern computing devices. The same numbers are reflected by PCMark and 3DMark benchmark.

Windows PCs running anti-virus software that is incompatible with the recent Meltdown and Spectre patches will no longer receive any security updates, Microsoft has warned. The latest update by Microsoft was meant to patch that vulnerability.

Where to go from here? Seems to me they were hoping no one would find out about the bugs whilst they silently fixed them.

When investing geniuses David and Tom Gardner have a stock tip, it can pay to listen. Similarly, companies should ensure all industry required info security controls are in place and working (e.g., access control, configuration management, patch management). But Microsoft placed the blame squarely on AMD, stating on its website that "some AMD chipsets do not conform to the documentation previously provided to Microsoft to develop the Windows operating system mitigations to protect against the chipset vulnerabilities known as Spectre and Meltdown".
