"The book is not about Steve Bannon, this book is about Donald Trump", Wolff said Friday.

"The Mercer Family recently dumped the leaker known as Sloppy Steve Bannon". In a series of early morning tweets, Trump claimed that Democrats and the media, out to get him, were "taking out the old Ronald Reagan playbook and screaming mental stability and intelligence".

The White House has slammed Wolff and the book as "fraudulent".

On Friday night, President Trump angrily tweeted about the book.

The book outlines three warring factions within the White House during the first half of the year.

"Reagan, a Republican who was the U.S. president from 1981-1989, was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 1994 and died in 2004". The former White House chief strategist ripped a June 2016 meeting by Donald Trump Jr. and other campaign aides with Russian officials in June 2016 as "treasonous".

Speaking to NPR, Wolff said he approached this book with an open mind about Trump. After #Sarah Huckabee Sanders accused Wolff of just "making up" stories to sell books, social media critics were quick to chime in [VIDEO].

"Whether he realised it was an interview or not, I don't know, but it was certainly not off the record". "That's also, though, why the American people chose him", he said.

Wolff has said that the White House's response to his reporting simply proves him correct.

Wolff said he spoke with Trump for several hours while working on the book, and that he spoke to people who met with Trump on a "daily and sometimes minute-by-minute basis".

In addition, Wolff says in the book that the president's relationship with his youngest son, Barron, 11, is distant, claiming "an absentee father for his first four children, Trump was even more absent for his fifth, Barron".

Wolff wrote: "Melania was in tears - and not of joy".

The author is defending his work despite White House attacks against its credibility.

The audio book is also available now on Audible for $27.99. The publisher instead moved up the release date to Friday. "And at the end, they had to look at Donald Trump and say, 'No, this is a man who can't function in his job as president.' He may have been elected president, but that does not turn him into president", he added.

Mr Trump's lawyers tried to block publication of the book, before publishers brought the release date forward.
