Blame game begins after Senate fails to stop shutdown

Blame game begins after Senate fails to stop shutdown

"President Trump on Saturday morning continued to blame Democrats for forcing a government shutdown overnight, arguing his opponents are 'far more' concerned with illegal immigration than the U.S. military and protecting the country's southern border", Fox News reported.

"And Mr. President.what we just witnessed on the floor was a cynical decision by Senate Democrats who shoved aside millions of Americans for the sake of irresponsible political gains".

As the clock struck midnight, in the absence of an agreed spending plan, federal services began to come to a halt or be scaled back.

Both the Republican and Democrat congressional leaders say they will keep talking, and the White House budget chief has expressed optimism that a resolution will be found before Monday.

Democrats stood firm, opposing the bill over their demands that it include protections for Dreamers, who are poised to lose their legal protections come March 5. Orrin G. Hatch, Republican of Utah, appeared to fall asleep. "We can then be even tougher on Crime (and Border), and even better to our Military & Veterans!"

It is unacceptable that Democrats would vote against a measure to keep our government open to do the work of the American people. But the talks fell apart almost as abruptly as they started.

"Democrats have bent over backward to negotiate with the White House", Schumer told a press briefing.

A sign announcing the closure of the Statue of Liberty, due to the U.S. government shutdown, sits near the ferry dock to the Statue of Liberty at Battery Park in New York, Jan. 20, 2018. A Bill put to the floor by senate majority leader Mitch McConnell shortly after 10pm collapsed, after Democrats decided not to endorse the proposal.

The House passed a measure Thursday night, but the effort is running into stiff resistance in the Senate, where Democrats are digging their heels in over immigration and there aren't enough GOP votes.

"Tonight, they put politics above our national security, military families, vulnerable children, and our country's ability to serve all Americans", the White House said in a statement.

Connecticut Governor Dan Malloy says the state has made preparations to mitigate the impacts of the shutdown as much as possible.

How do those rules apply to an official, like Trump, who's renting lavish ballrooms from himself, at a for-profit club that is also his home and "Winter White House"? And even as it remains open, it will take time for the government to review and approve renewal applications, which could cause people to lose protections and work permits in the meantime. Well, simply because Republicans are in favor of a DACA fix, broadly speaking, doesn't mean they have to support it without any conditions, and it certainly doesn't mean they have to attach it to the spending bill.

Senate Democratic leader Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., and colleagues said Trump had promised to address DACA as part of a new budget deal, but backed away under pressure from some aides and other Republicans.

Democrats, it seems, may precipitate a government shutdown this week.

The reality is complicated, thanks to a court ruling, a multistep process for ending the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals deportation relief process, and politicians' apparent lack of understanding ― either genuine or feigned ― about what's actually happening. After 16 days, I along with 86 other House Republicans voted to reopen the government.

The shutdown came as politicians failed to find agreement on a stopgap spending bill and comes on the first anniversary of President Donald Trump's inauguration.

But instead of calling Trump, it was Kelly - the retired four-star Marine who'd sat aside Trump during lunch - who called Schumer. The reasons Trump is to blame are pretty clear.

House Republicans were emphatic: this one isn't their fault. "Period", Rep. Billy Long, a Republican from Missouri. If Democrats win the seat, they could paint it as an early ripple in the coming midterm wave, said the strategist.

"I think this is extremely irresponsible", blasted moderate New Jersey Republican Tom MacArthur. Congress overrode Ford's veto on Oct. 1, but the partial shutdown did not end until nearly two weeks later when a CR became law. Graham floated the possibility of a three-week extension through Feb. 8. "The House has done their job".

Schumer contended that he offered Trump support for a wall at the Mexican border - a significant change for the Democrats - but said, "Negotiating with President Trump is like negotiating with Jell-O".
