Intel says rapidly issuing updates to all processors impacted by Meltdown

Intel security flaw Meltdown Meltdown Apple Apple Intel processor flaw Intel Apple Spectre Spectre bug Intel processor bug AMD processor bug

Some of it has been accurate, and some has been sensationalist and overblown.

Yesterday, we told you about a pair of exploits called Meltdown and Spectre. He sold the one chunk of shares at the price of $44.05 while the other lump was traded at $44.55.

Ordinary web-browsing could be enough to expose data to hackers in the wake of Google's exposure of a fundamental design flaw in Intel and other microprocessors. But patches are coming fast and furious.

Spectre was unearthed by Horn and Paul Kocher, Daniel Genkin from the University of Pennsylvania and University of Maryland, Mike Hamburg of Rambus, Moritz Lipp of Graz University of Technology, and Yuval Yarom of University of Adelaide and Data61. "These issues apply to all modern processors and affect nearly all computing devices and operating systems".

IDC estimated that there are 1.5bn PCs in use around the world today, out of which 90pc are powered by Intel processors. Both vulnerabilities require an attacker to be able to run their code on the device they are attacking...

However, the center warned that patching may diminish device performance by up to 30 percent and acknowledged that it represented only a partial solution. "It's going to be layered on top and it's going to cause problems".

"Brian's sale is unrelated", the company said in a statement. They access protected areas of memory to potentially decode and read.

As Digital Shadows noted, with a price tag of many thousands of dollars, "Criminals do not need to use Meltdown and Spectre for their attacks if they can profit in other ways". "We sat for hours in disbelief until we eliminated any possibility that this result was wrong", said Gruss. The availability of such an update depends on the company that manufactured your PC, as well as the chip manufacturer (Intel or AMD). "For Spectre, you have two options: disable JavaScript and load each site in a separate browser window". With the vulnerabilities being described by some as "the largest security flaws ever", it's little wonder that lawsuits sprang up so quickly.

Apple is expected to release an update in order to prevent the worse. To exploit the vulnerability, bad software needs to get into your machine, so the fewer opportunities you offer for that to happen, the better. The bugs affect all Intel processors issued since 1995.

There are actually two exploitable flaws, though they're related. This flaw is more difficult to take advantage of than Meltdown, but is also a lot harder to fix. Intel also says it is working with partners and others to fix these issues. So, while there is a potential real risk, in my opinion, it's not as great as many of the more traditional malware attacks we've seen in the recent past.

Chip-maker Advanced Micro Devices, whose products are mostly used in corporate server computers and personal computers, originally said it didn't believe its products were at risk for the flaw.

The firm also reassured users that the remaining instances will be completed in "the next several hours", with associated instance maintenance notifications. Although for very large data sets, that may be negatively impactful.
