Trump's FCC kills net neutrality, opening internet 'fast lanes' to ISPs

WASHINGTON DC- DECEMBER 14 Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai smiles during a commission meeting

Consumers should watch how their ISP responds to this over the next months and years.

Attitudes toward "net neutrality", or rules that prevent internet providers from limiting customers' access to certain websites or slowing download speeds for specific content, are largely split along party lines in Congress. The heated debate has turned into the kind of election issue that Democrats think will help them. "We must explore all judicial and political options in order to save the free and open internet". It could be that Comcast will follow through on some of its earlier promises or, as the new language suggests, it will start implementing paid prioritization (arguing that it is not discrimination). They shouldn't be allowed to block some sites, charge more to let consumers access some sites faster than others, or discriminate against some content. "This is the beginning of a longer legal battle".

The organizations behind and Team Internet (Demand Progress, Fight for the Future, and Free Press Action Fund) are announcing a massive Internet-wide campaign to demand that our elected officials in Congress use a Resolution of Disapproval under the Congressional Review Act (CRA) to overturn the FCC's illegitimate rulemaking.

"By rolling back essential and enforceable net neutrality protections, the FCC has enabled commercial interests at the expense of the public who depends on the internet as their primary means of information gathering, learning, and communication".

"Broadband providers will have more incentive to build networks, especially to underserved areas", Pai said before the vote took place.

"There is little competition in the broadband service market - more than half of all Americans have no choice in their provider - so consumers will be forced to accept ISP interference in their online experience", Beckerman said. Lead by President Trump, Republicans have criticized the regulations as overreaching, while Democrats believe them necessary to ensure fair and equal access to web content. The backlash to the FCC's attack on the Internet has reached a boiling point. Netflix, for example, struck deals with multiple providers to guarantee the necessary bandwidth to keep their services up and running.

"This week's FCC vote to destroy net neutrality is a threat to twenty-first century civil rights". They're publishing shallow op-eds aimed at papering over the real fears of Americans that literally anyone can tear down with a moment's thought.

In November 2018, all 435 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives will be up for grabs, as will 34 seats in the Senate.

A group of nearly 20 state attorneys general asked the FCC to delay the vote until the issue of fake comments is addressed.

"We're disappointed in the decision to gut #NetNeutrality protections that ushered in an unprecedented era of innovation, creativity & civic engagement".

Airbnb's CEO Brian Chesky said the vote was "wrong and disappointing" but fell short of vowing to take actions, only that it would "continue to speak out for net neutrality". The Internet Association, a trade group which represents industry giants like Facebook and Google, also sharply criticized repeal attempts.
