The smartphone standard is ripe for reinvention, and ZTE would like to take on that challenge with its new Axon M, a foldable smartphone sporting two screens. It will also be available to China, Europe, and Japan later. But then, it goes one step further by letting you combine both screens into one big-ass display, albeit with a not-so insignificant gap running down the middle.
So what is the phone about?ZTE, today, launched the Axon M that has two screens.
In terms of specifications, the ZTE Axon M sports two 5.2-inch (1080x1920) LCD displays with Gorilla Glass 5 protection. Consumers can make phone calls, text, browse the web and more from one screen when folded, fitting easily into a pocket. Furthermore, nothing appears to be stopping users from activating Nougat's natively supported Multi-Window feature to use three or more apps in a manner that's much more convenient than what smaller smartphones allow if the Dual mode proves to be too limiting in some scenarios.
Both of the displays on the device are full HD in panels and boast of a pixel density of 428ppi.
The moment both screens are locked next to the other, they create a larger display.
Finally, there's a traditional mode, which enables to users to interact with the Axon M just like any other smartphone. It's 12.1mm thickness sounds chunky compared with devices like the iPhone X, at 7.7mm, but 12.1mm is actually slightly thinner than the old iPhone 3GS-a phone which no-one reasonable complained about when it came to device thickness. Under the hood, the smartphone is powered by a blazing-fast Qualcomm Snapdragon 821processor coupled with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. There's a 20MP rear camera with f/1.8 aperture that also doubles up as a selfie camera. The camera module comes with image stabilisation and PDAF.
Why should you be excited?
This smartphone has an interesting camera arrangement.
The trend for revolutionising the display of the smartphone has been the top priority for manufacturers since the last few years.
"In theory a foldable device provides a more tablet-like screen size yet remains pocketable like a phone", said IDC analyst Bryan Ma.
