White House Press Secretary chokes back tears while discussing Las Vegas massacre

Officials say at least 58 people were killed and more than 500 injured in Las Vegas late Sunday night in the worst mass shooting in modern USA history. The suspect, 64-year old Stephen Paddock, sprayed bullets at attendees of the Route 91 Harvest country music festival.

Trump met privately with victims and their families, inviting them to visit the White House, before being introduced to a group of first responders for a sit-down meeting.

Earlier Mr Sullivan said he felt "physically ill" to think that he had interacted with Paddock before he committed the Las Vegas shooting killing 59 people.

The Islamic State has reportedly claimed the deadly mass shooting and said the attacker had converted to Islam a few months ago.

Trump said "a lot more" was being learned about Paddock.

Images posted by United States media showed automatic weapons attached to tripods lying on the ground of the hotel room, with scores of bullet casings littering the floor around them.

Sanders was unusually emotional in opening her press briefing, choking up and stifling tears as she recounted anecdotes of victims and heroes, by name, from the Sunday night horror on Las Vegas' famed strip.

The National Rifle Association said it "applauded" the action, while Everytown For Gun Safety President John Feinblatt said he hoped for more gun control rollbacks from the Trump administration.

Police noted that the death toll is preliminary, but if it remains at 50 or more, it would be the deadliest mass shooting in modern USA history, surpassing last year's attack at an Orlando nightclub by a gunman who said he acted on behalf of the Islamic State terrorist group. "It's not just one country, it's worldwide now", said Cleland. "They've done an wonderful job".

"I said, if you're ever in Washington, come on over to the Oval Office", Trump said. It also does not license gun owners, require guns to be registered, limit the number of guns a person can purchase in one sale, or impose a waiting period on gun purchases.

Trump largely stuck to a talking point repeated by dozens upon dozens of Republican officials: "Well, we're not going to talk about that today". California Rep. Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, told NPR on Tuesday that an Federal Bureau of Investigation briefing revealed that Paddock had some fully automatic weapons in his hotel room. By holding the pistol grip with one hand and pushing forward on the barrel with the other, the shooter's finger comes in contact with the trigger.
