Replicant or human? 'Blade Runner 2049' reignites existential debate

Margot Robbie gave a fan a tattoo on television

Every effect, each little detail in the "Blade Runner" sequel's formidable arsenal, creates the texture of a wondrously ugly near future, full of holographic accessories, slave-labor replicants and, as one character puts it, products and services of "the fabulous new".

oI read about the character that Ry.o began Ford, recalling his impressions upon reading the script, before hesitating. "I insisted to add that", says Villeneuve, "so it will really create a distance with the world". Blade Runner 2049 was screened for Chicago critics in Dolby cinema, highlighting the insane amount of detail in each shot, but even without the best quality image clarity, the film is bound to look damn good.

"I felt challenged by it, but excited by it". It's nothing short of miraculous that Blade Runner 2049 assembles a whole new storyline with what's left of the original, but still manages to leave Ridley Scott's puzzles (mostly) unsolved.

"Blade Runner 2049" takes place 30 years after the original film, when human-like robots called Replicants were hunted by police officers called "blade runners" in a dystopian Los Angeles. The stylish film was directed by Denis Villeneuve who is noted for "Arrival", "Prisoners", and "Sicario".

Was Harrison Ford's Officer Rick Deckard a human or a Replicant robot in 1982's "Blade Runner"?

After debuting with his documentary La Course Destination Monde in 1988, Villeneuve, 49, emerged as one of Canada's most visionary directors thanks to his Genie-winning Polytechnique and 2010's Incendies, which earned an Oscar nod for Best Foreign Language Film. I's a Ford specialty to be believably heroic, believably vulnerable.

As there are a few action and fight sequences in Blade Runner 2049, has staying in shape been hard for him? Blade Runner 2049 is at its best a triumphant exercise in all-encompassing cinema, the kind of story best told in widescreen. As far as Ford goes, it's great to see the actor revisiting so many of his roles from the 1980s. Infamously, numerous brands seen in the first film became obsolete long before 2019, when the film was set. It's a real melting pot of styles, themes and ideas. "I could feel that Jared was someone who was deeply passionate and very serious about what he was doing", says Villeneuve.

"I was living with this movie every day as a reference, so that was enough for me".

The 1992 Director's Cut is Ridley Scott-approved, though he didn't directly oversee this version as he was shooting Thelma and Louise at the time. "A lot of that world lived in (Villeneuve's) head, so it was important for me to get to Budapest as soon as possible and spend as much time ... as possible with him on set". It's a director's movie.

"How do you revisit a universe that has been copied and inspired so many movies after?"

Writing for Variety, Peter Debruge appreciated that you didn't have to see the first film to thoroughly enjoy the second. There's another one that I think is pretty powerful: "The Empire Strikes Back".
