Peterborough-area advocates say hashtag campaign highlights prevalence of sexual harassment

Janet Lee program director at the Newfoundland and Labrador Sexual Assault Crisis and Prevention Centre says there has been a major increase in calls this year

But at 2 a.m. she woke, unable to get back to sleep, she recalled later Monday, Oct. 16. "You can see the people it affects close to you and I think that is good for both people who want to talk about what's happened to them and for the people to know they are not alone". "The way people go around it is how you will make it positive or negative and I think that #MeToo is more of a positive way".

"For the next several minutes this child... struggled to tell me about her "stepdaddy" or rather her mother's boyfriend who was doing all sorts of monstrous things to her developing body..."

More women and men have been sharing their experiences because of a recent social media campaign.

I do not feel ashamed of these stories, for I am one of the fortunate women who have not been convinced by society that sexual assault and harassment is our own fault. For so long, victims of sexual assault or harassment push the crime aside because of stigma, or humiliation.

Burke's website Just Be shares details about how the "Me Too" movement was first created decades ago while shew as a youth camp director. "Me too is so powerful because somebody had said it to me and it changed the trajectory of my healing process once I heard that. There is no response from men saying, "I will stop this" and that's what is really worrisome from me".

Lucia Lorenzi saw #MeToo, and she immediately felt exhausted. Lili Reinhart is just one actress who spoke up, admitting that a male co-star once tried to take advantage of her while they were on a date. Before #MeToo, there was #MyHarveyWeinstein. Its goal is to empower young women of color.

"So walk into our police stations whenever you want to report sexual harassment, and our officers are there to hear your experiences with patience and kindness and take your complaints", said Kolkata police.

If you've been on Facebook or Twitter, you may have seen a simple hashtag that reads me too. But I don't know that a lot of sexism has been addressed that way.

Sexual assault is not a new issue, but this new initiative, started by a celebrity, is to show how alarming the number of victims there are and to encourage people to start speaking up to put an end to the problem. I was told that it wasn't that bad. "We live in a culture that tolerates sexual violence", said Langhammer.

This weekend, survivors of both sexual assault and harassment rallied around #MeToo, a hashtag meant to spread awareness about how alarmingly common it is to be a victim of sexual misconduct or violence. The question is: Will it actually change anything?

Actress and author Gabrielle Union is coming to the defense of sexual assault victims.

Without a clear path forward, it is the abused who are being asked, yet again, to shoulder the responsibility of their own assaults.

More importantly, she added, "if this hashtag helps women relieve themselves of the burden of carrying this around, then that is enough".

But many also expressed how wary they are of such campaigns: how does online activism help? "Because I was there", Rosenberg writes.
