MORRISSEY: On a desperate night, finally signs of life from the Cubs

Fans said they were nervous stuff would sell out and headed to the stores as fast as they could. For the longest time, the Cubs were the Chicago team dripping in the most saccharine-tinged nostalgia; goats and curses, dead announcers and "wait until next year" as some sort of lovable battle cry. "They are young (25 or under), large (Sanchez is the shortest at 6'2"; Bird the lightest at 220), and love playing together.

It felt like much of this season for the Cubs was a celebration of 2016, and why not?

Pitchers pitched well enough most of the time. Wood's xwOBA allowed in the first half sat at a sterling.242; the second-half figure jumped to.318.

- Cubs manager Joe Maddon turned out to be right. Judge and Sanchez were right in the middle of New York's big comeback in Game 4.

The National League Championship Series was supposed to feature two evenly-matched clubs going all-out in a brutal fight to see who went to the World Series. Not cheap, but maybe within reach for diehard fans. He basically acknowledged he was trying to get himself tossed this time around. "You look at the 2004 Boston team". The long-range forecast calls for daytime highs in the mid-70s.

Kids say the darnedest things. Once there, the whole game is set back to zero and another championship is a real possibility. It was fair, and what followed was a massive mess. "We intend to stay on the same path for many years to come". And for allowing a bit of dignity in a gentleman's sweep. It's the reason Arrieta goes through phases where he looks unhittable, and others where he can't find the plate.

But there are benefits to these mechanics. The pain soon subsides. But his fiancee isn't a Cubs fan. "But I do know that catching a home run ball at the World Series, that would be the Holy Grail". We know this. This is truth.

It's a give and take for Arrieta. But Baez got the lead back up to two with a shot to the left-field bleachers in the fifth, the raucous crowd chanting "Javy!" You name John Lackey official team ambassador to Chicagoland's railyards.

To understand the depths of Jake Arrieta's unpredictability, you can probably just start here. Everything is still pretty damn good in Cubdom. You're still immensely talented and have the benefit of a healthy wallet. But fans dying to see a home game will have to pay more than $1,000 for the cheapest seats at Dodger Stadium. Another postseason awaits 11 long months from now. Just not the Cubs. Replays shown on the video board, inside Wrigley Field, seemed to indicate differently and so Maddon got his money's worth before leaving.
