Las Vegas shooting: NRA opposes ban on bump stock device

Sen. Pat Spearman D North Las Vegas. @benjaminh
They would be appalled at the country we have become.
If we had the common sense to prohibit fully automatic weapons, it should be a no brainer to disallow semi-automatic guns acting in the same manner as fully automatic guns. And if legislation gets through, there's a long list of other narrow measures waiting their turn. No it doesn't, any more than registering automobiles will eventually lead to a ban on cars.
The pseudo-late-night comedians, with nothing else to bray about, are now fixated on guns, which are associated with country music by the condescending elites who portray anyone who owns guns as trigger-happy NRA members.
It doesn't start and end with stricter background checks or special licenses. Universal registration might help even more. It's incredibly risky. It's the big prize that the gun lobbies thought they were going to get. I want these to stop as badly as you do, and everyone, included me, wants to do something to ensure this is the absolute last time this will happen. Their Hearing Protection Act will make silencers as easy to obtain as guns are now. Every one of these facts circle us back to, "What should, or what can we do?"
The NRA famously proclaimed, "Guns don't kill people". People kill people. First, guns do kill people. And what about all the other causes of death by firearm, including accidents and suicides? Oddly, his profits had been declining under Donald Trump because gun buyers slowed their purchases, assured he'd never push gun control. Most gun sellers are federally licensed, and are required to perform background checks before finalizing a transaction. But then again, the association's duck-and-cover maneuver is coming only in the face of public outrage over the killing of 58 people and the injuring of more than 500 by a maniac spraying bullet after bullet down on a crowd of thousands. (We now know one overworked ATF agent in West Virginia has a card file he must manually go through to try to trace the history of any suspect gun.) There are 300 million guns in private hands in America. That certainly keeps invaders out. He says it is the most chaotic scene he has ever been a part of.
An investigator is seen from one of the broken windows of Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas, the United States, Oct. 4, 2017. Ted Cruz, R-Texas. It's "premature" to think about more gun control, said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky. Despite recent mass shootings - which only account for a tiny percentage of gun violence in the USA - gun violence rates are at their lowest in 20 years. "It's illegal to convert a semiautomatic to a fully automatic".
There is a difference between an argument for having guns to hunt, and the argument to have semi-automatic or automatic rifles. "It's an interpretive issue and they need to get the job done". We should reserve our strongest regulation for those.
But on Sunday, the NRA drew a line on an outright ban.
The Trump administration, which has close ties to the NRA, has frequently made Chicago a political talking point when it comes to gun violence. Besides, our law enforcement agencies on both the state and federal levels are more than well equipped to protect civilian populations. But, it's time to do something, even if it's just baby steps.
