JFK assassination files: The most interesting findings

A range of theories have developed over the years, with some blaming Fidel Castro, the CIA or the Mafia for the killing.

So I was disappointed when President Donald Trump, after tweeting that he would allow the full release, got cold tweet and blocked several hundred documents, citing national security concerns raised by the FBI and the CIA.

That is an apparent reference to osteopath Stephen Ward, a key figure in the "Profumo affair", a sex-and-espionage scandal that almost toppled the British government in 1963.

The documents approved for release show federal agents madly chasing after tips, however thin, in the days after the Nov. 22, 1963, assassination and juggling rumors and leads worldwide.

The memo said it was not the first time in the past year that people in the UK had received similar anonymous calls which were "strangely coincidental in nature".

Posner warns though that many of the documents had previously been released in redacted form and there is nothing new in them yet. But the chances of a bombshell are slim, according to the judge who led the independent board that reviewed and released thousands of the assassination documents in the 1990s. But that hasn't stopped the conspiracy theorists from speculating. Forty-nine million Americans, or 15 percent of the country, are age 65 and over, according to the Census Bureau.

Despite the wildness and lack of foundation of some conspiracy theories, Shenon said, it's understandable that suspicions will remain when the government publishes redacted documents. He joins "CBS This Morning: Saturday" from Virginia to discuss the most interesting new information in the files.

Asked if she could verify the veracity of Donald Trump's assertion on the campaign trail that Texas Sen. Oswald shot the officer on the streets of Dallas when the policeman stopped and questioned him, officials said.

The President said he came to the decision after consulting with his chief of staff, John Kelly, as well as the CIA and other agencies, and would release all files "other than the names and addresses of any mentioned person who is still living". Columbia Business School professor Michael Slepian has built his career on the science and psychology of secrets, and shared his expertise with Newsweek on Friday.

The National Archives late Thursday started making public about 2,800 JFK assassination records for the first time, but Trump delayed the release of other files pending review.

"A gnat simply does not kill a lion", is how Saul Pett of The Associated Press described what was fueling the search for answers.

Roughly 30,000 documents, including those with redactions, had been released to the public before Thursday.

The memo says Britain's MI5 intelligence service calculated that the call came 25 minutes before Kennedy was shot.

The decision to keep some documents secret is sure to fuel even more speculation and conspiracy theories.

The CIA memo calls Kostikov "an identified KGB officer" and a member of Department 13, a unit "responsible for sabotage and assassination". At this moment, the average person has 13 secrets, five of which that they've never told a single person about. Two aides said Trump was upset by what he perceived to be overly broad secrecy requests, adding that the agencies had been explicitly warned about his expectation that redactions be kept to a minimum.
