Hurricane Nate makes landfall in US

Hurricane Nate brought flooding and power outages to the US Gulf coast as it sloshed ashore outside Biloxi early on Sunday, the first hurricane to make landfall in MS since Katrina in 2005. We could see wind gusts around 35-45 miles per hour. The storm would "continue to quickly weaken as it moves farther inland", it added. Watches have been canceled in Carroll, Paulding, Heard, Pickens, Cherokee, Douglas, Troup and Cobb.

Hurricane warnings were in effect in New Orleans, including Lake Pontchartrain, and from Grand Isle, Louisiana, east to the Alabama-Florida border. Alerts remain in areas of Pointe a la Hache to the Okaloosa/Walton county line in Florida.

Hurricane Nate came ashore along Mississippi's coast outside Biloxi, the first hurricane to make landfall in the state since Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Forecasters say it will make landfall within the next hour or two. Rapid weakening is expected after landfall, with Nate becoming a tropical depression by Sunday night.

The tropical storm has since strengthened and is now a category one hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale.

Winds have picked up for the area to our south and west due to Nate.

The city braced overnight for what was expected to be a Category 2 storm with 100 mile-per-hour winds. The storm is about 40 miles SW of Birmingham with winds of 35 mph. Those areas could see anywhere from 3 to 6 inches of rain, the center said, with a maximum of 10 inches in some spots.

Governor John Bel Edwards praised the preparations state and local leaders made while Hurricane Nate was heading for Louisiana.

This storm followed hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria that devastated areas of the Caribbean and the southern region of the United States.

MA native John Adams who lives on Belle Fontaine Beach, a narrow strip of land between the Mississippi Sound and a coastal marsh, told the AP, "This is my first hurricane". Alabama Power announced earlier this morning that over 80,000 customers were without service.

The NHC predicted Nate would pass over portions of several southern states through late Sunday.

According to Lee Sithson, Mississippi's Emergency Management Director, 67 people have already moved into shelters before the storm has hit. State officials hope that means New Orleans won't run into problems with its pumps being able to handle the water. We're also watching for more rain bands to work through but they will both noticeably drop off after 5 p.m. ET. Weaknesses in that system were revealed during summer flash floods.

Severe weather in tropical storm feeder bands could spawn a few isolated spin-up tornadoes across parts of north Georgia.

Tropical Storm Nate gained force as it sped toward Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula Friday after drenching Central America in rain that was blamed for at least 21 deaths. There may not be a lot of warning for these particular types of storms.
