After Sunday's shooting, the mayor of Las Vegas and governor of Nevada asked those in the area to give blood, the response was overwhelming - lines hundreds of people deep stretching for blocks around the three donation centers, NBC News reports.
Brandon Baker, senior manager of recruitment at United Blood Services, said the United Blood Services in Las Vegas can handle the need from Las Vegas hospitals for blood, but people in Lubbock can help if they want to.
Adler said donors were turning out whether or not they were personally impacted by the massacre. So when more than 500 people were injured in Las Vegas and 59 died, Coloradans responded. "I feel like if we can do something as Americans, something to help each other, then we should", says Frazier.
Tragedies like Sunday nights do serve as a reminder to donate but the Red Cross tells us they are nearly always in need of blood.
People can learn about blood donation and follow the need for donation on the blood center's web site. United Blood Services is reporting that it has met its blood needs in Las Vegas for now.
To keep 2,600 hospitals and blood transfusion centers stocked with blood, the Red Cross needs 14,000 donations of one pint of blood per day.
Lines snaked out of blood donation centres across Nevada, with many queuing for as long as six hours. They are now encouraging people to make an appointment through their website.
Following the shooting, the Red Cross provided more than 250 additional blood products to local hospitals to help those injured. "We've had mass casualties come through this trauma center but nothing of this magnitude", he told Las Vegas station KTTV. By comparison, last Monday 371 people registered to donate.
Kelly Sopczynski, with Michigan Blood, said even though they are not sending extra blood to Las Vegas, it is always needed in Mid-Michigan. Most of the information in there (if not all of it) still applies, so give it a read if you're local and you have any further questions. "This is attractive to see everyone kind of get together and do something good cause we're all kind of the same on the inside", Muñoz said.
