Distraught parents are still holding out hope for survivors after the Enrique Rebsamen school buckled into a pile of concrete following the 7.1 magnitude quake. They dug through the rubble of collapsed schools, apartments, and homes, looking for survivors.
The country's team of rescuers, known as "the moles", are leading the volunteer rescue efforts. At least 225 people were killed in the quake.
The update came as survivors were still being pulled from rubble in the capital, spurring hope among relatives gathered at the sites of buildings collapsed by the magnitude 7.1 quake.
They also have moved to reassure the public by saying their teams will continue to search for missing loved ones who may have been caught up in the aftermath of the devastating quake.
"Mexico shares your pain" was posted on the President's official Twitter account as the period of mourning was announced. Tuesday's quake occurred at a depth of 51 kilometers because of which it was devastating. Another school in the south of the Mexican capital, the Enrique Rebsamen School, was hard hit. 21 of them were schoolchildren authorities confirmed.
Jorge Lopez, a 49-year-old Spaniard, said he raced to his children's school, to find it had collapsed but his offspring was safe.
The Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education said in a statement that the natural disaster left four dead and 40 injured at its Mexico City campus.
A CT missionary from Mexico City, who also lives in Berlin, was in Mexico with his family when the natural disaster hit. Southern Mexico bore the brunt of the quake as it was closest to the epicenter off the Pacific Coast. According to media reports and Oxfam staff in Mexico, more than 700 people were injured in Mexico City alone.
