Uber says sorry over London 'mistakes', but vows to appeal

Like Uber, Addison Lee treats its drivers as self-employed, entitling them to only basic protections, rather than workers, a category of employment law that also means they would be paid the minimum wage and holiday pay, among other benefits.

Uber's approach to how medical certificates for its drivers are obtained and how criminal record checks are obtained has also been a source of consternation for TfL.

In the October decision, the judges said that Uber's arguments that it is an application provider and not a taxi service were "faintly ridiculous".

Last month, Inspector Neil Billany, from the Metropolitan Police's taxi and private hire team, suggested Uber was putting reputation concerns ahead of public safety.

"On behalf of everyone at Uber globally, I'd like to apologise for the mistakes we've made".

During a city council meeting earlier this month, Pullman voted to reduce restrictions on background checks, allowing transportation services to operate with only a name-based social security card background check, instead of being fingerprinted. It was founded in 2012 by technology entrepreneurs John Zimmer and Logan Green, three years after Uber. They are standing up for Londoners and doing so from a position of relative strength given the importance of London as a market for Uber.

The decision sparked a back and forth, with critics saying 40,000 drivers will be put out of work, and 3.5m users affected.

A ride services IPO tests the belief of many auto industry insiders that individual auto ownership will wane as people will sell their cars and rely on "mobility services" such as ride services, car share, bike share - and self-driving vehicles. "I wonder what regard TfL gave to their legal duty to prevent discrimination as part of its decision making process" said Iqbal Wahhab, former chairman of the Department of Work and Pensions Ethnic Minority Advisory Group. It was more focused on growing rapidly than adhering to institutional rules. She said drivers are under no obligation to use its booking app. Uber claims that nearly all taxi and private hire drivers were self-employed for decades before its app was released. Mr Khosrowshahi confirmed Uber would challenge TfL's ban in court.

In response, Mayor Sadiq Khan told Radio 4's Today programme this morning that Uber was bringing the full might of its PR to weigh against the ruling. It has already organised a petition of more than 800,000 signatories against TfL's latest move against it. And unlike other taxi regulators, it is exclusively accountable to London's ambitious mayor, Sadiq Khan, who does not face re-election until 2020.

"Uber exploded onto the scene and very deliberately tried to ignore or flout regulations", he said.

We might also want this company to actively pursue electrification of its fleet to combat rising emissions. As big as the company is, and as much as it is in the news, it is hard to see through all the contradicting messages about the ride hailing company.

Few businesses have this kind of turnover in workers, even if those workers are independent contractors, as they are at Uber.
