Twitter scraps 140-character limit
Twitter for the first time is expanding beyond its 140-character limit, the company announced this week.
While some languages present more avenue for expression within the 140-character boundary, the social media platform says it wants "every person around the world to easily express themselves". Such a significant change may indicate Twitter will begin to take a more aggressive approach to attract new users and boost engagement.
To many, Twitter has become a place for public figures, celebrities and businesses to express their opinions.
Twitter acknowledged the "emotional attachment" some users might have toward the 140 characters. Twitter has gradually added the ability to embed HTML links, images, emojis and GIFs in tweets, which also have expanded the versatility of communications and marketing on its platform.
Twitter also notes that other countries have it easier than the English language due to different characters, so this is a chance to make it equal across the board. In a blog post explaining the change, Twitter didn't say when the new feature would carry over to everyone. That is because tweets in those languages can already fit in a lot more information, as a single character might represent a noun.
Aliza Rosen, Product Manager at Twitter, noted the reasons behind Twitter's character extension roll out.
A communication in January a year ago revealed that Twitter was performing some internal tests for lengthy tweets and considering texts as long as 10,000 characters to boost its client base. As a result, it is testing out the new character limit in all languages but Japanese, Chinese, and Korean. We will recommend the Tweet 280 tool over other tools that are doing the rounds for its sheer simplicity.
"And if they start looking like Facebook, then Facebook will take them out and has the warchest for it".
Once the testing is done successfully, we can expect Twitter to make this feature available for all its users across the globe in few days. Blau said. "We see Twitter sort of struggling to get this business right while everyone else is moving in a another direction".
