The storm, which at its peak was designated a Category 5 hurricane with sustained winds of 185 mile per hour, is expected to become a tropical depression Tuesday as it moves into eastern Alabama.

Now the entire Georgia coast is under a storm surge warning as Irma continues its destructive march north.

Hurricane Irma made its way to the Tampa Bay area late last night and is now crawling up Florida's spine, slinging brutal winds and rain across the state.

Weaker but still massive, Hurricane Irma as a Category 1 storm is still lashing Florida's west coast as it churns northwest Monday morning.

A tornado spun off by Irma was reported on the Georgia coast, and firefighters inland had to rescue several people after trees fell on their homes.

Officials say the deaths of two people in Georgia are being blamed on Tropical Storm Irma.

The hurricane triggered mass evacuations of historic proportions, with more than six million people asked to flee in Florida and the neighboring states. The storm was weakening, but still potent, as it traveled northward through Georgia and SC. "We have for 90 years avoided this day, but I think our day has come".

While Irma will not directly strike our state, it will cause some hazardous conditions in SC. "It is by far and away the largest in the history of our company". Rains and storm surge also flooded coastal areas in Georgia and SC.

While we are in the clear from a direct strike, we are still at risk for some severe weather.

Flash flood emergency: The National Weather Service issued a flash flood emergency for parts of downtown.

North Charleston Fire Chief Greg Bulanow said emergency vehicles would cease to operate with winds of 40 miles per hour or stronger, but he does not expect that to happen.

A hurricane watch is in effect Monday from Edisto Beach into Florida. Universal Orlando said Monday that all three of its parks will reopen at 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Flash floods hit downtown Charleston, South Carolina, while almost 1 million people in Georgia lost power as the storm thumped the coast. Later on, there would not be much to see as the surging rains and floods carry on into the evening.

Over the weekend, Irma claimed its first United States fatality - a man found dead in a pickup truck that had crashed into a tree in high winds in the town of Marathon, in the Florida Keys, local officials said. Roads were flooded, but city spokesman Zachery Good said the majority of Homestead's mobile homes were spared destruction.
