Scalise: Surgeries After Shooting Were Like 'Rebuilding Humpty Dumpty'

Scalise has been in the hospital since the shooting on June 14 in Alexandria, Va., where five victims were wounded and the gunman, James Hodgkinson, was shot dead by police.

Scalise thanked them on behalf of himself and several others in the room for acting quickly, "even after being shot both themselves". Clearly, though, Scalise's delight in his return will play a major and positive role in advancing his recovery - and maybe provide some rehab to the nation as well.

Now after surgeries and rehabilitation, Scalise is back on the job - and he thanked his friends and colleagues for keeping him going. The chamber was packed with members from both sides of the aisle, and as Scalise made his way to his seat with the assistance of forearm crutches, he was hugged by lawmakers.

When the House quieted down from the cheers and applause, Rep. Scalise began recalling that day and rattling off a list of those whom he believed deserved gratitude.

It's sure to be a welcome sight for lawmakers, who once feared they may never see their colleague again and greeted him warmly.

One of the things for which he prayed, he said, was that "David and Crystal would be successful", naming David Bailey and Crystal Griner, the two Capitol Police officers who were assigned to Scalise's detail and returned fire, killing the gunman.

"When I come back into this chamber today, just seeing the faces of all of you, it just means more than you can imagine", Scalise said. He then blew a kiss back at his wife.

President Trump tweeted a "welcome back" message at Scalise Thursday afternoon.

House Speaker Paul Ryan's voice cracked as he introduced Scalise.

In a statement, MedStar Washington Hospital Center officials said they watched "with great joy" as Scalise returned to work.

Seated behind Scalise was Rep. Cedric Richmond, D-La., star of the Democrats' baseball team.

In an interview with "60 Minutes" to air this weekend, the Louisiana Republican opened up for the first time about the day when a gunman opened fire at the practice, shooting him in the hip.

"My femur was shattered, " he told correspondent Norah O'Donnell, according to excerpts of the interview released Thursday by CBS News. Doctors used steel plates to fix the areas. But, if you look at the outpouring of love - my gosh Jennifer and I have been overwhelmed with the outpouring - It's given us the strength to get through all of this.
