Red Bull confident victory still in their grasp

BAD INTENTIONS Hamilton is distinctly second favourite at Marina Bay street circuit but an unexpected victory for the Mercedes driver would set alarm bells ringing at Ferrari

Daniel Ricciardo, who topped the Friday practice sessions, was the third fastest with 1:39.840.

Sebastian Vettel showed his mastery of the Marina Bay circuit to take pole position Saturday for the Singapore Grand Prix, while championship rival Lewis Hamilton struggled throughout and finished fifth.

A clear inference from the free practice sessions and qualifying has been how the Red Bull cars have been leading the pack, and the McLaren's who have had the worst engine could place the vehicle as high as P3 on the time-sheets.

Kimi Raikkonen in the second Ferrari secured fourth place on the grid for the Singapore Grand Prix.

"I think all in all the whole weekend was good progression, getting better and better".

Raikkonen said Ferrari was struggling to improve the auto without making it worse in other aspects as it battled to turn things around after a hard Friday.

The Red Bull duo have looked fastest ever since they began practice on the Marina Bay circuit and team principal Christian Horner is upbeat about his team's chances this weekend.

But the 28-year-old, who won for Red Bull this year in Baku and scored the team's last pole position in Monaco last year, believes his auto has an edge over Vettel's Ferrari in race conditions. I will accept a little bit of defeat, but tomorrow I am still confident we will get victory. "Red Bull seem like they're very strong and they're thereabouts with Ferrari, so we've got some work to do, but nothing is out of reach".

Don't know where it (lap) came from.

"Singapore will be a different story but it's better to go there in the lead than behind", the team's non-executive chairman Niki Lauda told Reuters after the Monza race.

"Yeah, I still believe [Red Bull can win]", said Ricciardo, who qualified third.

Fernando Alonso set the fourth-fastest time ahead of McLaren teammate Stoffel Vandoorne just a day after the Woking-based squad announced a split with engine-supplier Honda and a new deal starting next year with Renault. "I've just got to try and keep the pressure on without cooking my auto". The battle of the Red Bulls continued, but Ricciardo managed to stay ahead, with Hamilton taking second momentarily.

"When you watch this documentary and you see meat clogging up your arteries, you see all the stuff they put in the meat, stuff we are all eating, there is no way I am going to disregard that".

"I got everything I could out of the auto, everything and more", he added.

Eliminated in Q1 were Magnussen, Massa, Stroll, Wehrlein and Ericsson. Force India duo Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon took 12th and 14th, sandwiching Toro Rosso's Daniil Kvyat, while Romain Grosjean ended the second session slowest for Haas.
