If Alexander does decide to retire and Manning runs for his seat, Manning may have the backing of the 77-year-old Republican senator.
Trump won Tennessee by 26 points last fall, and in response to Corker's criticism, he tweeted that the state wasn't happy with its junior senator. Green withdrew from consideration for that post amid a backlash over his past controversial statements on gay rights issues, Islam and evolution. I think the chances are low.
Some people have wondered if he'd make a run for governor, but Corker said the field for that race is already full and that's not on his mind.
In office, Corker has been something of a moderate conservative among the Senate Republican Caucus, eschewing numerous right-wing positions on foreign policy favored by other Republicans from the south such as Texas Senator Ted Cruz and others.
Corker also admitted that Manning texted him after his retirement announcement to not "fan the flames" about a potential campaign.
That's a reference to Haslam's brother, Cleveland Browns' owner Jimmy Haslam, having joined the list of NFL team owners objecting to President Donald Trump calling on owners to fire players who kneel when the national anthem is played.
Days before Manning made that comment, Alexander told USA Today that he hadn't yet decided whether he'd run again in 2020.
