Speaking a day after the North successfully fired a Hwasong-12 intermediate-range ballistic missile over Japan, Mr Kim said the country is nearing its goal of "equilibrium" in military force with the US.

North Korea on Friday fired an intermediate-range ballistic missile over Japan that landed in the Pacific, responding to new United Nations sanctions with its furthest-ever missile flight.

Queens Congressman Joseph Crowley, the House Democratic caucus chairman, criticized North Korea for launching a ballistic missile over a northern Japanese island on Friday, saying that it is hurting efforts for peace and stability in the region. The missile went about 2,300 miles and reached a maximum height of 500 miles, Japanese and South Korean officials said, according to the Pacific Daily News. The UN Security Council unanimously condemned the "highly provocative" missile test.

But a lack of technology is still a stumbling block for North Korea's program, as it has been for years.

Kim's comments suggest he has been clearly irked by President Donald Trump's bellicose remarks in recent months.

"It's new that we're hearing he has a goal", Grant told FOX Business' Charles Payne on "Making Money with Charles Payne".

As a result, the yen has continued to behave as a safe-haven currency despite Japan's geographical proximity to North Korea.

The Chinese ambassador to Washington said that the U.S. should refrain from issuing threats over North Korea and should instead do more to resume dialogue and negotiation.

Russian Federation backed the new sanctions against North Korea on Monday, banning it from trading in textiles and restricting oil imports.

Hours after the launch, North Korea threatened to take "stronger" actions against the USA if it continued to push for more sanctions. "Now, it's not what we would prefer to do, so what we have to do is call on all nations, call on everyone to do everything we can to address this global problem short of war". The meeting will be closed-door, diplomats said.

While the North has refused to accept South Korean offers of dialogue, Kim's remarks made it clear Pyongyang wants Washington's respect.

The growing frequency, power and confidence displayed by the state's tests has heightened fears North Korea is closer than ever to its goal of building a military arsenal that can target both USA troops in Asia and the U.S. homeland.
