"I was just running down the street a while ago talking about Russell Westbrook and the police pulls me over and asks me if I'm alright!"
On Friday, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported that Westbrook signed a five-year, $205 million extension with the Thunder.
Anthony is in the final guaranteed season on his contract. It will run through 2022-23, taking Westbrook into free agency at age 34.
The point guard has never shown a desire to leave and is now likely to spend his entire career in Oklahoma City. Westbrook signed a 10-year contract with Jordan Brand in September to become the face of the shoe giant. Having players that are both skilled on offense and defense like Patterson and Paul George gives the team balance.
Now, Westbrook can focus on making this season special.
Primarily because of Westbrook, the Thunder's marketability was sustained even after Durant left.
Trading for George and Anthony made it clear the Thunder isn't worrying about the luxury tax ramifications.
Westbrook nails a $205 million contract with OKC. His 2018-19 salary, the first year of the extension, will be $35.3 million.
The Thunder's projected luxury tax bill this year after acquiring Anthony: almost $27.8 million.
By NBA rule, if the Westbrook matter had not been resolved before October 16, he could not have signed the extension until next summer. They may be one of the best defensive teams in the league, while on offense they have three awesome scorers in George, Carmelo, and Westbrook. He confirmed the signing on Instagram by posting a picture of himself in a Thunder uniform with the caption, "WHY NOT??".
There had been speculation about Westbrook's future with the Thunder given the movement of players throughout the league. "So I've been working on a little fatherhood", Westbrook said when asked at Monday's media day why he is yet to sign the extension.
Anthony is highly respected around the league.
Last year Westbrook was the only star player on their team while the others were average National Basketball Association players. It puts to rest the narrative that "Oklahoma City will never be able to keep superstars.", "No one wants to play in Oklahoma.".
