Looting reported on Caribbean island struck by hurricane

Irma was first classified as a tropical storm on August 30 and rapidly intensified over the following days, becoming a category four hurricane on September 4.

More than a million people on the Caribbean's largest island have evacuated as a precaution, authorities said. "We've done as much as we possibly can as a small country with very limited resources", said Ronald Sanders, A&B's ambassador to the USA.

Hundreds of people living in the lower areas of the capital Havana were brought to safer facilities on higher ground.

In the Dominican Republic and Haiti, authorities have lifted their red alerts while evaluating the damage caused by the hurricane.

Storm surge projections are now at 3-6 feet along the Suncoast.

Speaking after a meeting of the Government's emergency Cobra committee, Mrs May said she had spoken to governors of British territories to assure them that the United Kingdom response would be both short and long-term.

"We'll never get in", Jamilla Bartley lamented as she stood in the parking lot.

Bender told CBSN they had contacted the US embassy and they were given a list of hotels that still had power.

"They said this one is going to be bigger than Andrew. Metal roofs went flying".

An AFP reporter said the deafening gusts of the wind were sweeping the province's main city Caribbean.

Perhaps one of the most feared influences from the storm in low-lying Charleston is surge, the dramatic rise in the ocean as strong wind pushes water toward the coast.

The governor of Camaguey province said the area was "seriously affected" and there has been "significant damage" to the area.

After striking the Caribbean, Irma is now making its way to South Florida where Miami-Dade County has expanded evacuation orders and residents are already clogging Florida's evacuation routes with traffic jams.

In St. Martin, formerly lush green hills were stripped to a brown stubble and the smell of rotting debris spread across the French Caribbean territory of 40,000 people.

By Friday night, Irma's winds had diminished to 155 miles per hour (250 kph) and it was downgraded to a Category 4 storm, though still considered extremely unsafe.

Irma uprooted trees, leveled homes and caused major infrastructure damage to the island nation of Cuba on Saturday. "When I got to this neighborhood, I cried".

France's Interior Minister Gérard Collomb said nine people were dead and seven missing in the French territory on St Martin, an island shared with the Netherlands, and St Barthélemy.

But the Bahamas have largely been spared after Irma changed track.

Hurricane Irma hit Barbuda as a Category 5 hurricane on Wednesday, killing one person and damaging 95% of the island's buildings, said Gaston Browne, the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda.

John Lovell, president of Travel Leaders Network leisure group and hotels, said if the reports of destruction on some islands that he's been hearing are true, recovery will take a long time, Skift reported.

"Unfortunately, there are more victims to mourn", Rutte said. Pictures from St. Thomas, the most populated of the US Virgin Islands and a popular tourist destination, showed extensive damage.

Thompson, the head of the English department at Anguilla's only high school, said: "I don't even know something that's not destroyed".
