Louisville head coach Rick Pitino is expected to be fired on Wednesday

Louisville head coach Rick Pitino is expected to be fired on Wednesday

Additionally, Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich was placed on unpaid leave as well. "Doing nothing would be a tacit endorsement of unethical and criminal behaviour", he added.

Already on probation for a scandal involving strippers and escorts entertaining recruits and other players in dorm rooms - Pitino also said past year he was unaware of those actions - the Louisville basketball program could face severe penalties depending on the outcome of the current investigation.

Pitino, the team's head coach since 2001, has been "effectively fired" according to his lawyer, Steve Pence, The Courier-Journal reported Wednesday.

Pitino was seen leaving his morning meeting with Postel hours prior to the press conference and didn't have much to say. "This is an ongoing investigation and they're going to continue looking into this, so unfortunately it probably gets worse before it gets better".

Pitino, the highest-paid coach in college basketball, was set to make just under $7.8 million for the 2017-18 season, according to USA Today.

On Tuesday, federal prosecutors announced that 10 men - including four college basketball assistant coaches and a top Adidas executive - were charged with providing hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes to influence top athletes' choices of schools and shoe sponsors. The NCAA suspended Pitino for five games last season and vacated certain wins, including likely the Cardinals' 2013 national title.

Pitino, who is the highest paid coach in basketball, makes almost $7.8 million a year, according to USA TODAY's salary database. They've been identified as Chuck Person of Auburn University, Emanuel Richardson of the University of Arizona, Tony Bland of USC and Lamont Evans of Oklahoma State.

Pitino's attorney said, "The information disclosed thus far ... is clearly insufficient to implicate coach Pitino in any type of misconduct".

Rick Pitino is out as head coach of the Louisville Cardinals following the FBI's indictment of the school in a corruption investigation, leaving the program in a complicated situation.

Bowen finds himself in the spotlight early this week following a federal investigation into alleged pay-for-play schemes in college basketball.

On Tuesday, Pitino said that the accusations "come as a complete shock to me".
