Should you get the winter flu jab? All you need to know about the vaccine
For needle-phobes, there's a skin-deep vaccine that uses tiny needles, and a needle-free jet injector that shoots another vaccine through the skin.
The most recent data on vaccination rates, compiled by the CDC and the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID), found only a slight increase among all populations but far below the national goal of a 70 percent vaccination rate.
The flu vaccination rate among all Americans was 48.6 percent last season, up just 1.2 percentage points from the prior season.
Since August, the Cascade City-County Health Department has confirmed eight cases of influenza in the county.
"Germs are spread very easily". Here's all you need to know if you're considering getting the flu jab...
"Vaccine effectiviness ranges between 40 percent to 60 percent each year", said Dr. Tom Price, Secretary of Health and Human Services. For example, in a 2009 experiment, adults who were otherwise sedentary started implementing more aerobic exercises like walking into their daily routines, and over the course of 10 months, they "displayed higher average influenza antibody counts 20 weeks after a flu vaccine".
The 2016-17 flu season in Wyoming was rated as "moderately severe" by the Wyoming Department of Health. The CDC bases its recommendations on when flu infections are likely to become common, this year recommending people aim to get the vaccine by the end of October. The hospitalization rate was nearly double that of the 2015-2016 season and higher across all age groups than the previous eight seasons, with the exception of the 2014-2015 season.
Two vaccine brands target the 65-and-older crowd. "In addition, prescription antiviral medications may help treat the flu", Shelton said.
"What's circulating in the southern hemisphere kind of gives us a determination of what we might expect to see in our season", DeBusk said. "Children do die of the flu".
The team also emphasises that the mood effect was only significant for one of the flu strains in that year's vaccine, H1N1 - and participants had the smallest levels of antibody for this one prior to vaccination. That rating is determined by the number of influenza-associated deaths, the number of laboratory-diagnosed influenza cases and the percentage of visits to clinics or hospitals for flu-like illness.
Physicians stress the vaccine will not cause the flu.
Some people claim that the flu shot is just a "shot in the dark" when it comes to which strains of influenza will infect people, and therefore it's not worth bothering with a vaccine. The CDC also recommends cleaning and disinfecting any surfaces or objects that may be contaminated with flu virus germs.
"We now produce an ample supply of vaccine and vaccine options", said Dr. "Let's get that protection", said Dr. William Schaffner, director of the NFID.
"It's convenient and it's quick", said Karen Carmody-McIntosh, a University library communications associate.
