As Clock Ticks on DACA, Republican Senators Offer Path to Citizenship

On Sept. 5, President Donald Trump said he is winding down the DACA program because he wanted Congress to create immigration reform outside of executive action. That legislation would implement much of the Obama-era executive order and grant permanent legal status to more than 1 million young people who arrived in the US before they turned 18 and have lived in the USA for four years, provided they meet certain criteria, including enrolling in college, joining the military or finding jobs.

Congress has until March 5 to pass legislation to help immigrants who are now shielded from deportation by the program. There are shortages of teachers, nurses, high-technology workers and many others, and DACA recipients are becoming nurses, teachers, first responders and engineers.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' executive committee on September 12 urged the Catholic faithful to advocate for the passage of the DREAM Act or similar legislation "as a prompt, humane and durable solution to this problem of greatest urgency".

She also added that there will be a lot of pressure to those in legal assistance that will help DACA Dreamers finalize their immigration status before the program is fully terminated.

"Six months is a short time period".

While federal immigration policies remain in flux, leaders from local law enforcement and government agencies last week convened a Petaluma town hall meeting to assuage unease in the community and reaffirm support for those fearful for their future in Sonoma County.

Hatch, who co-authored the DREAM Act with Sen. It was reintroduced in 2010 and earlier this year.

Kilmeade said Trump tweeted that chain migration can not be allowed into any immigration legislation, and asked if the White House was on board with Lankford's plan. They hope to send at least 1,000 postcards to senators and representatives, asking for their support on a vote expected in the spring of 2018 to put the DACA provisions into law. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said they made a deal with Trump protecting Dreamers as part of a larger agreement that included enhanced border security, but this has not been confirmed by Trump.

"We have an abundance of resources, people who have stepped up", she said.

Congress must step up during this moral crisis and pass a clean DREAM Act now.

For Succeed, eligible individuals must have been in the US since June 5, 2012, and must have arrived before the age of 16. "The gaps can be bridged...."

"They do not remember a home country they came from originally".

Durbin, however, did not state his support for the SUCCEED Act.

Meanwhile, Senate Republicans have proposed the Succeed Act, which would create a path to citizenship for the 800,000 DACA recipients using a merit-based solution. In just days, immigrant youth will be barred from renewing their DACA applications, and soon tens of thousands of immigrant youth will become fully vulnerable to the impulses of Trump's deportation agents. "We want to make them feel comfortable and feel like they belong, because they do belong". It says that if you arrived in this country under the age of 18 and meet other requirements you can qualify. Garcia believes that the change may cause fear for DREAMers, "They're going to be scared to come back". "Seeing [your parents'] struggle forces you not to take what we have here for granted", he says. The counselors are Fred Weiner and Martha Gunning who told The VOICE they have open hours in their offices in SC 226 for students looking for emotional help.

Immigrant advocates will need to keep it up, according to Feasley at the U.S.C.C.B.

"There is a money issue, I agree with you there", Duke responded, "but the process itself is very simple". "Congress has been unable to get this done".
