Zuma survives no-confidence vote; some ANC lawmakers join opposition

S. African ruling party confident of its MPs' loyalty in face of secret ballot
"We believe the voters should now have the chance to express their opinion about the conduct of the ANC in defending Jacob Zuma. We are here to remove Duduzane because Duduzane's father is the most corrupt individual in this country".
A simple majority of 201 votes was required to remove Zuma as President of South Africa.
Former president Mbeki, now in Nairobi as an African Union observer of the ongoing Kenyan elections, told journalists today that the secret ballot was a chance for the MPs to "vote honestly" and "vote with their conscience".
Zuma survived the attempt to oust him, but he was weakened after at least 30 African National Congress lawmakers voted on Tuesday for a motion that would have forced him to resign. It was not enough to pass.
Before the result was officially announced, members of the ruling ANC broke into song, in celebration.
However, it was Zuma's supporters who made the most noise when Parliament Speaker Baleka Mbete read the results.
Zuma has survived eight no confidence motions in the past seven years.
Soon after, the economy was downgraded to sub-investment grade, also known as junk status. In March, he sacked two finance officials.
Immediately following the vote, a defiant and buoyant Zuma thanked the ANC faithful who gathered outside Parliament to show support.
"I know many of you are exhausted of talking about President Zuma and so am I. And I'm exhausted of speaking about the Guptas". It's hard to defeat the ANC.
Opposition leader Mmusi Maimane championed the motion on the floor with the vocal support of Julius Malema's Economic Freedom Fighters.
"Do the right thing today".
Opposition parties and the Future South Africa coalition of social, religious and community organisations have vowed to intensify their battle to get Zuma recalled by the ANC. "Honourable Gordhan, would you play your part today in resetting the course of history?"
"If the National Assembly is dissolved in terms of section 50, or when its term expires, the President, by proclamation must call and set dates for an election, which must be held within 90 days of the date the Assembly was dissolved or its term expired".
Zuma's critics see him as having delegitimized the ANC, the liberation movement that has governed South Africa since the election of Nelson Mandela as the country's first democratic president put a definitive end to apartheid in 1994. For NPR News, I'm Peter Granitz in Pretoria.
