Will the US Dollar Gain or Lose This Week?

Tokyo shares fall by break as North Korea worries linger

Japan's Nikkei share average tumbled to near a three-month low on Monday, recoiling in response to a stronger yen as tensions between the United States and North Korea prompted investors to dump riskier assets.

On the currency markets, the pound was down 0.3% against the USA dollar after the greenback strengthened on hopes that tensions between America and North Korea will cool.

Investors were less fearful of threats from North Korea on Monday and US stocks closed mostly in the green.

In a Sunday op-ed published by The Wall Street Journal, the two officials said "the US has no interest in regime change or accelerated reunification of Korea".

The dollar was up 0.4 per cent against the Japanese yen, reversing some of its 1.37 per cent loss last week against the safe-haven currency.

US stock index futures pointed to a strong open on Monday boosted by a solid performance seen from worldwide markets as geopolitical tensions ease.

Teves & Co. cited sluggish inflation, running below the Federal Reserve's 2% target, and the prospect of weaker-than-expected economic reports as possible headwinds to the market and the Fed's rate-hike plans that might conversely help to support gold buying.

Thailand markets were closed for a public holiday.

Brent crude, the worldwide benchmark, was last down 30 cents at $50.43 a barrel.

That was due to worries over the potential impact of the yen's recent surge against the dollar.

Shares of companies mining gold retreated after the price of the metal declined as North Korea signaled it would delay a decision on firing missiles towards Guam, a USA territory in the Pacific.

Futures on the S&P 500 were up 0.2 per cent as of 9:03am in Tokyo.

The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield rose to 2.245% Tuesday from 2.217% Monday.

Away from the geopolitical drama, US inflation data is due at 1330 GMT. This is the fastest pace of expansion since the first quarter of 2015 and it was much better than the expected rate of 2.5% and a pick up from the upwardly revised figure for the quarter to March-end of 1.5%.

The FTSE 100 ended the day up by 0.6 percent, to 7,353.89, recovering slightly after what was the worst week for it since April.

United States crude was last down 2.7 percent at $47.50 per barrel and Brent was last at $50.65, down 2.78 percent.
