He made the call on Tuesday in Abuja at the inauguration of the activities marking the World Breastfeeding Week and the Launch of Breastfeeding Advocacy Initiative (BAI).

Tedros Ghebreyesus, director-general of World Health Organization said in a statement that mothers should start breastfeeding within one hour of birth and continue until the child is two years old.

Refreshments, prizes and child care are provided.

Breastfeeding Week is held annually between the 1 to 7 of August to encourage breastfeeding and improve the health of babies around the world.

For a mother and child, bonding often begins with breastfeeding.

"There is a need for corporate preparedness in enabling working women to breastfeed, as only 35 per cent of new lactating mothers of India were able to go back to their jobs within six-nine months", said the survey.

Schoolchildren should be taught the importance of breastfeeding, say doctors who believe the government is not doing enough to help new mothers.

'It is no wonder that for many mothers, there are too many barriers'.

Almost three-quarters agreed with the statement that there was too much emphasis on telling women why they should breastfeed, and not enough on supporting them to do it. Breastfeeding is natural, but not all mums find it easy, and some mums can not or choose not to do it, so we must respect that too.

Only around 17 in every 100 children are fed exclusively on breast milk for the first six months of life.

Exclusive breastfeeding for six months and breastfeeding for at least a year or longer is considered the best health practice for baby and mother. Formula milk, when contains the right amount of nutrients, act as an wonderful alternative to breast milk.

Aiyedun also said that for exclusive breastfeeding to be effective and sustained there must be a good relationship with the gate keepers such as the head of communities, religious and traditional rulers among others.

She added that breastfeeding in public is still "stigmatised" and that support is needed for women who require more encouragement to do so.

Breastfeeding is a natural process, however mothers may require support, knowledge and education.

On the inauguration of BAI, Nanama said it was aimed at raising visibility of breastfeeding as the foundation of child survival; help in its development as well as its benefits for the mother's health.

"Although it is different in composition, infant formula is an adequate source of nutrients". This designation indicates that the breastfeeding policy, training, and support by the staff from both facilities will be focused on assisting and supporting women in their efforts to achieve their individual breastfeeding goals.
