Cleveland Clinic named No. 2 hospital by US News for the second consecutive year
University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center took third, followed by Fairview Hospital in fourth. Both were in a three-way tie for No. 6 in the Seattle metropolitan area, and in a three-way tie for No. 8 in Washington state. Emory St. Joseph's ranked high performing in two specialties: gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery.
MGH also earned the #5 spot for Cardiology & Heart Surgery. Also, according to U.S. News calculations of data, they received higher-than-average ratings for common hospital procedures like hip and heart valve surgeries. The results are from an independent, nationwide evaluation of more than 4,500 facilities.
The ranking factors in hospital performance in 16 specialty areas as well as procedures offered. The rankings remain focused on objective measures such as risk-adjusted survival and readmission rates, volume, patient safety and quality of nursing, but the methodology expanded for the 2017-18 review.
University of Michigan Health System President David Spahlinger said Michigan Medicine's commitment to improving outcomes and patient care likely led to the improved rankings.
Cleveland Clinic, Johns Hopkins, Massachusetts General and UCSF Medical Center rounded out the Top 5.
New U.S. News rankings for children's hospitals debuted in June, in which the university also lost ground.
