Trump says ties with Russian Federation at 'all-time low,' blames Congress

A State Department official has anonymously called the weekend’s development “regrettable”

Russian President Vladimir Putin says the United States will have to cut its diplomatic staff in Russia by 755 employees.

Commenting on Senator McCain's remarks for Radio Sputnik, political analyst Nikolai Shlyamin said that McCain's approach toward Russian Federation was understandable, if regrettable.

It is important for Washington to show political will and discard attempts of sanctions diktat for the sake of improving relations between Russian Federation and the United States, the Kremlin said Monday.

Moscow ordered the reduction in us diplomatic staff after USA lawmakers passed a bill that would impose additional sanctions on Russian Federation and sent it to President Donald Trump for his signature.

Russia, meanwhile, has stepped up its accusations that Washington is trying to unjustly and "illegally" isolate it with sanctions and other measures.

The U.S. State Department called Putin's move "a regrettable and uncalled-for act".

US President Donald Trump says his country's relationship with Russian Federation is at a "dangerous low", amid a feud with Congress over new sanctions imposed against Moscow. At the time, Russia did not mount a proportional response, and a Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said Putin was "in no rush to make a decision".

Putin latest sanctions: The world now awaits the reaction from US President Donald Trump after Russian President Vladimir Putin expels US diplomats from Russia.

The new USA penalties were short-sighted and risked harming global stability, it said in a statement on its website.

After several rounds of expulsions in 1986, the Soviet Union banned approximately 200 locally hired Soviet nationals from working for the USA diplomatic mission. It is possible if new Russian diplomats get visas to the US, Putin will cancel or change his rough order.

All staff at the US embassy in Moscow were on Monday summoned to an all-hands meeting where Ambassador John F. Tefft briefed employees on the Russian decision - the toughest diplomatic demarche between the two countries since the Cold War. In 2013, the mission employed 1,279 staffers, 934 of which were local hires.

"The link to the poll was distributed in student communities, the universities' and schools' groups through social networks (VKontakte, Instagram, Twitter and Facebook) in more than 30 Russian regions", the center said.

Pifer said he expects the same determined spirit from USA embassy personnel now.

Russian authorities are now barring American diplomats and their families from a USA recreational residence on the outskirts of Moscow, part of sweeping retaliatory measures announced by Kremlin leader Vladmir Putin.

Last December, Trump's predecessor Barack Obama ordered 35 Russian diplomats to leave the U.S., saying the actions were being carried out in response to Moscow's alleged attempt to interfere in the election. The US embassy was ordered by the Kremlin to remove the 60 percent of its diplomatic staff, but many of them will be Russian citizens.

Should the Kremlin indeed hope that President Trump can still make good on his campaign promise to drastically improve relations with Putin's Russian Federation, it may be up for negative surprise. That includes diplomats and technical workers, he said.

"We waited for quite a long time that, perhaps, something will change for the better, we held out hope that the situation would somehow change, but, judging by everything, if it changes, it will not be soon."
