Trump delays action on opioid menace

Trump held the rally in Huntington, West Virginia, where Mayor Stephen Williams estimates one in 10 residents of the city and surrounding county are addicted to opioids. The Centers for Disease Control reports opioid overdoses claimed 33,000 lives in 2015. Since 1999, the number of opioid overdoses has quadrupled, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and as of 2015, 27 million people were reported now using prescription or illegal drugs. "Strong law enforcement is absolutely vital to having a drug-free society", Trump said while speaking to media at his New Jersey golf club. And deaths from drug overdoses rose sharply in the first nine months of 2016, the government reported Tuesday. Overdose deaths in the US are happening at an alarming rate, and the president campaigned on a promise to reverse the problem.

"[The NIH] is working on a vaccine for addiction", Price said.

It is speculated that Trump is likely to address one or more of these recommendations in his address today. Trump should heed the call and elevate this crisis into a priority for national action. In a hurricane we don't allow stores to gouge consumers for gas or water and the same should be true for life-saving drugs in this opioid emergency. The House version of Obamacare repeal-and-replace legislation also could have watered down the requirement to include addiction treatment as an essential health-care benefit for private plans sold on the exchanges. "We are going to solve that problem", Trump told the crowd.

Price and the president's counselor, Kellyanne Conway, didn't mention Christie's commission during a news conference on the opioid crisis.

"Nobody is safe from this epidemic that threatens young and old, rich and poor, urban and rural communities everybody is threatened", Mr. Trump said.

Erin Canterbury, a New Hampshire Democrat who had voted for then-candidate Trump in 2016, said she was irate when she heard that Trump called New Hampshire "a drug-infested den". The reality, experts say, is a solution to the problem could be in how doctors prescribe addictive drugs like hydrocodone, OxyContin and Percocet.

The commission, meanwhile, started out on productive footing.

Price said the briefing included discussion of policies outlined in the commission's report, including expanding resources for treatment and recovery, increasing access to the overdose-reversal drug naloxone, and improving data collection and sharing efforts.

The overdose death rates are highest for people ages 25 to 64 in the Rust Belt, in Appalachia and some western states. "We must act boldly to stop it".

Despite the recommendation of the presidential opioid commission, the president did not declare a national emergency.

The impact of declaring a national emergency isn't directly clear. It would also put pressure on Congress to provide more funding.

KEITH: Yeah. And the commission was talking about treatment whereas the president has been talking about enforcement.

A White House spokesman said Tuesday morning that the "administration is still completing the review process of the recently submitted interim report" and is not yet ready for any announcements. No members of the opioid commission appeared to be in the room.
