Trump blasts US Senate rules after healthcare bill setback

Senators passed the existing filibuster rule in 1975 that requires a supermajority to end debate on most types of bills.

"I'm critical of the Obama administration and the then-Democratic majority of passing legislation on a very partisan basis", New Jersey Republican Rep. Leonard Lance, a member of the Problem Solvers Caucus who voted against a House bill to repeal Obamacare earlier this year, told CNN.

The president's threats came shortly after he harshly criticized Republicans, writing on Twitter that "they look like fools" for their failure to get rid of the Affordable Care Act. Aides for Republican Sen.

The truly horrifying thing is that 49 Republican senators fell for that logic - including those from Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama. Within minutes Trump tweeted to express his deep disappointment.

"A disastrous bill to take away health care from millions of hard working people, and raise the costs for almost everyone has been defeated", said Congressman Ro Khanna, in a statement.

Republicans are zero for five thus far on presenting health care plans that would actually improve the issues that Americans are now experiencing under the Affordable Care Act: increasing premiums and, in some counties, a collapsing marketplace. There was a close call in the middle of the night on Thursday, but the Senate came just one vote shy of passing their "skinny repeal" of Obamacare, leaving Trump with nothing to celebrate this weekend.

Alaska Gov. Bill Walker said he was pleased with the most recent vote and supports a bipartisan approach to addressing the issue of health care in this country.

"The president will not accept those who said, quote, 'it's time to move on, '" Kellyanne Conway, a senior counselor to Trump, said on Fox News Sunday.

While the GOP murmured "trust us" to some recalcitrant senators, promising that the House would not pass it anyway, the president was tweeting "Go Republican Senators, Go!" and health insurance coverage for an estimated 16 million Americans hung in the balance.

US President Donald Trump has warned of slashing subsidies provided to people enabling them to buy health insurance if Republican lawmakers can not quickly approve a legislation to replace Obamacare. It's prohibited insurance companies from refusing to insure people with pre-existing conditions.

As Senate Republicans have been scrambling to get enough votes to advance Obamacare repeal, multiple pieces of health care legislation put up by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) have failed to get 50 votes. It is frightening that only three GOP senators stood up for principles and the health of all Americans, and for the desire to hold regular order to build a consensus.
