Tigers SP Justin Verlander clears waivers, free to be traded
05 Agosto 2017, 05:19 | Cornelio Vivanco
The Tigers beat the Orioles 7-5 on Thursday night at Camden Yards.
With J.J. Hardy's injury, the Orioles needed a more permanent solution at shortstop. The Orioles will attempt to win for the sixth time in seven games when they host the Detroit Tigers in the second of a four-game series on Friday.
Additionally, Justin Verlander will take the mound for the Tigers. Wojciechowski allowed only three hits, including Mike Leake's run-scoring infield single, and left after throwing 78 pitches.
Verlander (7-7) struck out 10 and gave up two runs and six hits over seven innings. It was so perfect that this gif, from MLB.com's Cut4, should be next to the textbook definition of "triple play". According to a tweet from the team's official Twitter account, we know what the Tigers batting order will look like against Baltimore. Markakis took Adam Conley (4-4) deep in the bottom half of the inning to make the score 4-3.
Darren O'Day pitched in the ninth facing three batters. But I watch him in [batting practice], and some of the approaches he's had allows him to hit the ball where he's hitting it. He's running good, and we'll see.
Even if the Tigers were to entertain the idea of trading their former ace, it's highly unlikely any team would be willing to pick up his hefty salary. Tim Beckham hit his 14th home run of the season and his second with the Orioles. He got McCann by half a step, and the triple play was in the books.
Upton then belted a grand slam to left on the first pitch from Givens (7-1). "That's why he was starting at Bowie", Showalter said. He went two for four today with a no-doubt long ball off of Verlander. That was his first home run since July 7. It wasn't like I sat down and had this long deep talk with him.
Other than those two home runs, the Orioles' offense was quiet. That escape included a controversial strikeout of Caleb Joseph, when the Baltimore catcher got hit by the pitch on an 0-2 count. Edward Mujica followed in his Detroit Tigers debut, striking out a pair in two innings. And yet the Orioles lost both games.
Baltimore's second triple play of the season occurred in the second inning.
Tigers: RHP Michael Fulmer (elbow) was placed on the 10-day disabled list.
