'Sikkim standoff: China says its restraint has 'bottom line'

Both sides have been mobilising troops in recent weeks near the border areas. India said its troops were attempting to urge the Chinese forces not to change the status quo and that any construction would have "serious security implications for India".

Sushma Swaraj, external affairs minister spoke in Parliament yesterday to support the stance of the government on the issue stating that the ongoing tussle can be resolved by talks. China should understand that war would never solve any problem and while at the end of the war, one may look like being victorious, it never would be so on actual terms.

Only on June 29, that is a week-and-a-half after the standoff began, did Bhutan's government even issue a statement protesting the alleged Chinese incursion.

Doklam is near Sikkim and is an important strategic point for Bhutan as well as India.

The editorial said India had challenged a country which was far more superior in strength.

"We are not negotiating only on Doklam, we are talking about bilateral relations in entirety. The Chinese action in the Doklam area is therefore of concern", she said.

External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Gopal Baglay said that India was continuously coordinating with Bhutan to find a mutually-acceptable solution to the Dokalam standoff.

Earlier on Thursday, the Chinese foreign and defence ministries have released statements on the illegal trespass of Indian troops into Chinese territory, vowing to take all necessary measures to make India withdraw its troops unconditionally.

India must not expect China to concede its violation of China's territory, analysts said, after a spokesman from the Ministry of National Defense issued a statement warning India to abandon illusions.

"Indian side is always keeping "peace" on the tip of its tongue".

"This is by no means for peace", Geng emphasized as cited by China's Xinhua news agency.

Hu also said that the objective of this "war" will be to either "expel" Indian troops from Doklam or capture them.

In a first direct reference to the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the state run Chinese media, Global Times has warned India of "obvious results" of war calling the Modi Administration "reckless" and "irresponsible".

"This incident is illegal under global law".

The expert's view comes as the Chinese Defence Ministry said on Thursday that India should not test its patience over Doklam and that "restraint has a bottom line".

"The standoff has not been resolved because China and India see the incident from different perspectives". Has also shown the patience of the upper level to maintain normal bilateral relations and regional peace and stability.
