Shahid Abbasi Named Interim Prime Minister of Pakistan

Pakistan's parliament will meet on Tuesday to elect a new prime minister after the disqualification of three-term prime minister Nawaz Sharif, as thousands gathered in the capital Islamabad Sunday to voice support for opposition leader Imran Khan.

The crowds joined Khan in celebrating the ousting of former leader Nawaz Sharif, who resigned on Friday following a decision from Pakistan's Supreme Court to disqualify him from public office. █ █ █ █ █ █ █ █ █ █ Imran Khan pays tribute to Pak SC judges for judgment Imran Khan lauded the Supreme Court of Pakistan for removing Nawaz Sharif from the office of Prime Minister in connection with the Panamagate case.

Shahbaz, now the chief minister of Punjab province - Pakistan's most populous region and the Sharifs' political heartland - will have to resign from his post and run for a by-election to join parliament before he is elected as prime minister. This time around, Sharif was dismissed after a long investigation stemming from revelations in the Panama Papers that Sharif's children harbored offshore assets.

Now his brother the Chief Minister of Punjab Shahbaz Sharif has been mooted as his potential successor, fuelling rumours of nepotism within the ruling Pakistan Muslim League.

For the present, the ruling PML (N) has to nominate an interim prime minister. Some speculate his opponents didn't want him in power in the run-up to the 2018 elections.

Abbasi, the former minister for petroleum and natural resources, is the principal accused in a National Accountability Bureau (NAB) case registered in 2015 over the award of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) import contract, Dawn News reported.

A statement issued by the NAB said its executive board had chose to file the four cases in line with the court's judgement. "We are without a prime minister even now", he told The Associated Press.

Mr Sharif said he was removed by the Supreme Court on "baseless allegations".

A political commentator in the piece referred Imran Khan as a "grandmaster of political suicide,". But this is where head and heart qualities of a leader come to real test and we are very confident that he will live up to the expectations of the people and prove to be a national leader by steering the country out of all crises by his visionary approach.

Khan's relations with Pakistan's powerful military also raise questions.

It would not be surprising if the army wanted Sharif out. The charges against Sharif include money laundering to buy assets in London in the 1990s. It found, among other things, that Sharif's daughter, Maryam Nawaz, potentially falsified ownership documents that were dated 2006 but written in a font that was not commercially available until 2007. "And that is why Pakistan has been left behind developed nations", Khan said from the stage. In the 70 years of the country's independence, not one of its 18 prime ministers has completed a full term in office. The Sharif government had reportedly warned the military to do more to crack down on terrorist groups operating in the country, or risk facing worldwide isolation.
