Yankees vs Red Sox: Why baseball's greatest rivalry is back
After a 3-0 lead in the 8th inning it appeared as though the Boston Red Sox were heading for their 9th straight victory to continue the win streak and build upon their first place lead over the Yankees in NY.
For three hours, the Yankees had little reason to believe that's what it would be, but Yankees-Red Sox games hardly ever are that short - just another part of the night that wasn't really how anyone would draw it up. Aaron Hicks got the Yankees going with a two-run homer before Didi Gregorius and Todd Frazier added RBI singles to put NY ahead 4-3.
This time, the Red Sox made the most of it. The Yankees loaded the bases and added insurance when Ronald Torreyes lifted a sacrifice fly.
Will the Yankees take the second game of their series against the Red Sox when the rivals meet again at 4:05PM ET? So right away, I knew he could hit and be able to play in the big leagues.
Gary Sanchez singled, went to second on a wild pitch and Aaron Judge walked. Then came the alternate reality for Nunez.
Ramirez, who has feasted on Yankees pitching this season and last, belted a 3-1 fastball off the back wall of the visitors' bullpen in left field in the first inning, staking the Red Sox to a 2-0 lead.
Red Sox lefty Drew Pomeranz (12-4) turned in a good outing holding the Yankees to three runs on seven hits over 6 2/3 innings. After a pinpoint throw from Hicks, and a well-executed catch and tag from third baseman Todd Frazier, the Sox had yet another baserunner thrown out. But he certainly couldn't have foreseen such a drastic drop-off from his two prized position prospects after they took turns electrifying baseball and reenergizing the franchise, Sanchez late last season and Judge for 3 ½ months to open this one. "I mean there's a one in a million chance it curves over like that". He's made just 11 starts and pitched to a 3.82 ERA/3.98 FIP overall while going to war with the local media and team broadcaster Dennis Eckersley, and it's not yet clear whether he'll even pitch again this year.
The Red Sox would get one back in the top of the 9th, but Mitch Moreland would fly out to center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury to end the game.
That stat would be prescient for Friday's matchup against Red Sox southpaw Eduardo Rodriguez.
Giancarlo Stanton belted his major-league-leading 40th home run and Derek Dietrich hit a tie-breaking single as Miami rallied to defeat Colorado.
The Red Sox can rest assured, then, that they will get a heavy dose of Hicks over the next few weeks.
After the game, Reed stated that Hicks "played to the ballpark", making a reference to Yankee Stadium's 314 foot, right field wall.
Rob Refsnyder had three hits for Toronto, which gained a split of the first two games of the three-game interleague series. Aaron Hicks followed with a two-run homer to the short porch in right field, and the Yankees, scoreless in their previous 16 innings, were off to the races.
"We're forcing him to throw a strike", Red Sox manager John Farrell told reporters.

He went on to say that Liverpool is notorious for not allowing their players to leave and hence his friend had no other option. Carragher, who described Liverpool as a "shambles", added: "That first half was like Liverpool at their worst last season".
West Ham United in a better place than last season
But the solution is not changing players every season. "We were focused on the goals that our striker was scoring". After all of City's problems in goal last season, Guardiola made sure to sign the right man for the job.

What's more, Manchester City won the possession battle shockingly heavily, taking 76 percent of the ball in the first half. Brighton and Hove Albion's last home game in the top division of English football was against City in 1983.

Then there is a brand new goalkeeper , £35m Ederson of Benfica, who must be able to make the saves that Claudio Bravo could not. The defensive midfielder role looks a little fragile with Yaya Toure and Fernandinho both on the wrong side of 30.
