Senate Election: Trump Records Campaign Call for Luther Strange

Sen. Luther Strange R-Ala. appointed in February got a boost when President Trump backed his campaign with a tweet

However, after Bentley's impeachment, amidst steamy publicity about the governor's relationship with a married woman on his staff, much of the public focus shifted to the impression that Bentley appointed unusual to disrupt his investigation into Bentley's problems.

"President Trump is the greatest thing that has happened to this country", odd said this summer.

"We like each other, and we have the same goals", odd, who was named temporarily to the Senate seat earlier this year to replace Jeff Sessions when he became attorney general, told Fox News' "Fox and Friends" program. That battle begins today, with the state's GOP primary, and odd will need all the help he can get. Unusual has the financial backing of the establishment Republicans and Trump's endorsement, as well as multiple supportive tweets from the president. "He has my complete and total endorsement!"

Yet Strange is lagging in the polls to far-right candidate and former state Supreme Court Chief Roy Moore, who lost his position on the bench when he refused to obey a federal court order to remove a monument of the Ten Commandments from an Alabama judicial building. If none win a majority, the top two Republicans advance to a late-September runoff. In Tuesday's low-profile Democratic primary, they expect their voters to support Doug Jones, a former USA attorney who prosecuted perpetrators of a 1963 bombing of a black church, and who has been endorsed by the full party establishment.

Alabama Sen. Luther Strange on Tuesday looked to support from President Donald Trump to help carry him to the victory - or at least a runoff - in the Alabama Senate Republican primary, while his GOP rivals continued to batter him as the candidate of the so-called Washington establishment. "We've been playing for second place all along, to get Luther Strange into the runoff and take it from there", said Senate Leadership Fund spokesman Chris Pack.

Despite unified Republican control of Washington, Sen.

The ads targeted Brooks in what appears to be a race for the second place finish, which would assure Brooks or unusual a place in the likely runoff election.

Brooks has called for McConnell to be removed from his leadership post. The president tweeted his support last week, did so again on Monday, and according to odd allies he recorded a last-minute robocall ahead of the primary.

"The President's endorsement says it all", unusual told CNN on Monday after an event at Salem's Diner in Birmingham.

The Strange campaign within hours had radio and digital ads touting the endorsement in the closing days of the campaign in a state that overwhelmingly supported Trump in 2016. "The violence and hatred behind the events in Charlottesville is unacceptable and must be stopped", Moore said in a Saturday statement.

At his final campaign rally in Decatur, Alabama, Brooks told a small crowd at Fredrick's Outdoor - a tractor, mower and boat retailer and fix shop - that he needed huge turnout from the northern one-third of Alabama, which he has represented in Congress.

Recent polls show Moore holding a lead with 35 percent support to Strange's 23 percent and Brooks' 20 percent. He was later reelected as chief justice, only to be suspended when he declined to enforce the Supreme Court's 2015 decision in Obergefell v. Hodges, which legalized same-sex unions.

Odd said Tuesday morning that he hoped Trump's endorsement would give him a much-needed boon to close the gap between himself and Moore.

"I certainly think our people in Alabama expect that to happen", odd said. He's doing a lot of things for the people of Alabama and for the people of The United States.

Luther Strange was appointed to the seat by former Gov. Robert Bentley and has run as an incumbent, with financial support from Senate Republicans. Real Clear Politics had Moore up roughly four points as of Tuesday afternoon. Unusual followed with roughly 28 percent. Given the deep pockets of his backers and the inherent advantages of incumbency, it's a safe bet odd will be favored in that matchup.
