It was a terrific race for McLaren - given the sort of situation that the team find themselves in.

Mercedes suffered radio communication problems with Hamilton's side of the garage for majority of the race but regained contact on track in the latter part of the race. Nico Hülkenberg got into the top ten but finished seventh and has a five place grid drop. Fortunately for Magnussen, there was no damage done to his Haas. The same couldn't be said for Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen.

The impact ended Ricciardo's race, with the auto stranded on the track and fluid leaking from the broken radiator, and brought out the safety vehicle.

Notably, the Brit now trails championship leader Vettel by just one point. Third place went to Mercedes AMG F1's Valtteri Bottas. "I was trying to get close enough to Kimi at some point to attack but there was no opportunity, and then we swapped, as a team, and Lewis tried it as well". Thanks to his overzealous move, Verstappen was handed a 10-second penalty.

Formula One history has countless examples of teams forcing drivers to obey orders but usually with one dominant player benefiting. Among the first to stop was Bottas with his team opting for an undercut strategy.

"During the opening laps I felt that it wasn't right but it didn't impact too much because it was only small".

With Vettel having mechanical issues, Raikkonen reportedly requested his team that he be allowed to pass Vettel for a chance to win the race.

With Kimi Raikkonen qualifying second, a clean start for both could see Vettel pull away while the Finn keeps the rest in check. When, during the last lap Hamilton was unable to catch up, he gave Bottas his position back.

"Ending his career with Ferrari would be a privilege, but until now we did not go very far with Lewis", he said.

Hamilton closed up on both Ferraris after an indifferent start but was unable to pass either on a circuit where it is notoriously hard to overtake. Verstappen finished fifth despite that, which was quite impressive. On a hot day at the Hungaroring, the outright lap record was broken several times with Vettel finally taking pole in 1:16.276, one-tenth clear of Raikkonen and two-tenths ahead of Bottas. Force India drivers Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon took eighth and ninth place respectively.

McLaren's Fernando Alonso, who turned 35 on Saturday, produced his best showing of the season by coming in an astonishing sixth despite his car's infamously slow Honda engine.
