About 80 percent of the vehicles were found to have cracks in their manifolds.

.

So far, CMPD has sent 14 of its 148 Explorers from the affected model years off to Ford for fix.

Ford Motor Company will now pay to fix Ford Explorers driven by police officers.

Ford is offering to fix its Chicago-built Police Interceptor SUVs amid reports of elevated carbon monoxide levels and growing concern among officers.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is also investigating and has been looking to determine how widespread issues with the Ford Explorer SUVs may be.

Engineers drove the cruisers around town at fast speeds, sat idling, and pored over the Explorer SUVs trying to figure out why carbon monoxide was leaking from them.

The Sanford Police Department has 20 vehicles in its fleet.

She said that police departments can bring their Police Interceptors to dealers to have them examined for exhaust leaks, and have any seals reinforced to prevent carbon monoxide from entering the passenger cabin. The concern surrounds fumes seeping inside Ford Explorers, making some officers sick.

The motor company said equipment was installed after leaving its factory, and the company said it will pay for repairs.

State police spokesman David Procopio said a sample of state police cruisers were being run through tests with Ford technicians at the state police driving course in Devens and were still awaiting results last night.

Injuries recorded because of the issue range from unspecified to loss of consciousness, with the majority indicating nausea, headaches or light headedness, the report reads. One crashed their vehicle in MA. Ford is working with police departments around the country to check for problems.

The federal safety agency is examining vehicles from Austin and Auburn as part of its investigation.

The Austin Police Department has experienced carbon monoxide issues over the past five months, he said. The city could end up parking its entire fleet.

A total of 791 people nationwide have complained to the government about the fumes, while Ford has received more than 2,000 complaints and warranty claims. Police officers in several states have crashed or almost crashed in the SUVs, and they say carbon monoxide poisoning is the cause.

High levels of carbon monoxide - an odorless, colorless gas that can be fatal, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention - were reported in Ford Police Interceptor patrol cars in Texas and MA.
