North Korea threatens to strike Guam following Trump 'fire and fury' comments

North Korea US missile test

"It's evident that it could ramp up into a more serious conflict".

This comes just hours after President Donald Trump said any North Korean threat to the US would be met with "fire and fury". Let's take a step back.

State media in the rogue state made the terrifying revelation just hours after US President Donald Trump said any threats against America would be met with "fire and fury". The US military routinely discloses information about North Korean missile movements and launches.

Meanwhile, some in Congress are calling for calm.

The North's statement came two days after the UN Security Council unanimously approved new sanctions to punish the North including a ban on coal and other exports worth over $US1 billion (A$1.26 billion).

McCain said the USA risks getting into a serious confrontation with North Korea, and invoked former President Teddy Roosevelt's famous "big stick" policy.

DPRK is the acronym for the North's formal name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. "So, President Trump sounds more like a North Korean leader, unfortunately, than an American leader".

Trump's "fire and fury" comments about North Korea today weren't in tweet form, but aside from that, Jeffrey Lewis really called this one accurately.

Ms Bishop condemned North Korea's conduct as "dangerous, destabilising and illegal under global law".

Rep. Eliot Engel, D-New York, the top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said that the president has undermined US credibility by drawing "an absurd red line". Earlier in the day, he tweeted his satisfaction about the new United Nations sanctions against North Korea and seemed inclined to give the sanctions and diplomacy more time.

The UN has implemented increasingly tough sanctions - to little effect.

If all of that is true, North Korea is no longer a gadfly country ruled by a maniacal dictator with a small arsenal of nuclear weapons that can not be delivered long distances. Experts say both were fired at a steep angle to avoid hitting land and fell into waters off the coast of the Korean peninsula. He added that "the critical thing is that this risky regime comes to its senses".

"The president was sending out a very strong, deterrent signal to North Korea - a strong deterrent message not even to consider using nuclear weapons", said Long Island U.S. Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.) "If they do, they will literally be demolished from the face of the earth".
